Just as I figured. Carbonite's stock price plunged 12% right after they announced they would stop sponsoring Rush's show.
http://dailycaller.com/2012/03/06/investors-flee-carbonite-after-limbaugh-announcement/In addition, their service cancellation rate sharply increased. I'm sure that Mozy will pick up the slack (Hannity pushes them).
MY TAKE:
I wasn't too thrilled with Carbonite. I really don't see the value other than the fact they are offsite. I created an Intranet for just the price of a external network drive, so I essentially remote to it wherever I go.
But Carbonite was not great anyway. I know someone who actually had a computer problem. Unless you are part of the corporate package, your bandwidth transfer is roughly 50 to 60K, MAXIMUM, which could take long periods of time for most customers.
SOOO...here is what I think happened.
1. A lot of new business for Carbonite came as a result of their affiliation with Rush. I would never have joined them without Rush's encomium.
2. Since I didn't think it was worth the 60 or so bucks a year for their drip-drip method of file sharing, Essentially, I didn't use it the last four or five months of my contract, though I didn't cancel it.
3. I think a lot of people were in my position, where they didn't think that Carbonite wasn't worth the constant effort. (They were buying "peace of mind" more than actual pragmatic purpose, in my opinion).
4. So... when Carbonite pulled out, and it wasn't providing a great service, they cancelled. And investors are running away.
I can't really say I blame them. I DO blame Carbonite's business and marketing divisions, though. They are all idiots. The listen to threats by whackos, and ignore the cash of their paying customers. Good riddance.
