Well, it was a great place to be a security officer, say in the NKVD or the MVD.  Other than that it pretty much blew.

I don't think the DUmbass slept through it, more than likely was stoned or ****ed-up on something else.

However Taverner isn't a complete failure, he can always serve as an example of what not to do.

having actually been to the good old USSR in 1985 and 1988, I can tell you that tere was nothing good for the common man there. If you were in the government, life was much better. Government workers were on par with a very low income family in the West. The member in good standing with the party were doing quite well and had access to hard currency and what that bought from the West. In general, the people of the USSR were lucky to have a subsistence diet. Only the government workers were fat. There were huge stores with nothing but empty shelves and long lines in the morning in the cities I was at.

We installed a machines in factories and two things come to mind beside the huge stores with nothing in them. One was that it was sweltering in this one factory. The Russian workers handed me a roughly gallon size jug of clear substance that I assumed was water. I took a big swig and it turned out to be really bad vodka. The other was that the night before we were to leave all our tools left the site. The rep said that was just par for the course in the USSR. It was a glorious country under what little Barry wants to do to the USA.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

109. Tell that to the Native Americans & the slaves.

And how many once-thriving lakes & rivers in the US are now devoid of fish? The Great Lakes fishing fleets are long gone, never to return. I also remember when the pollution in the Cuyahoga River catching fire was nearly an annual event.

The USSR was never as evil, and America was never as great as the dreamy-eyed American propaganda painted them.

How about the modern welfare state and Social-Democracies? Do people think those massive reforms were granted out of the goodness of the capitalists's non-existent hearts? No,they were granted out of fear. The USSR showed that a (very flawed) alternative to private capitalism could exist and that scared the capitalists here and in Europe into giving major reforms. Reforms that they are now trying to give back. Oh,and if it wasn't for the USSR WWII could have gone very differently.

As to the point about famines, you can't blame that on Soviet policy simply because Russia has problems with famines under the Tsars.

24. Greater equality of the sexes.

No sexual exploitation of women for commerce, as opposed to the industrial scale degradation going on there now.

You're not really going to suggest that prostitution wasn't rampant.  When people are hungry, they will do almost anything.  Including selling anything they have.

Lydia Leftcoast bears that out:

(oh yes, the poverty led to an explosion of drug trafficking and prostitution, which combined to give the former Soviet Union a horrible rate of AIDS infection)

Here's a little exchange:

A lot of the deaths cited for the USSR are inflated by adding numbers caused by famine or WWII. For the record I don't support the USSR under any of its various leaders, but there is so much misinformation about it.

RZM has a clue, the rest of them seem to be dodging the cluebat pretty successfully.  I do wish the true believers could be put into the roles of cogs in the Great Socialist Machine, in Belarus or Ukraine in the 30s.  A few of them might survive to learn from it, most would starve, die at Kolyma, or meet their fates in penal labor camps constructing Stalin's follies in European Russia or the howling wilderness east of the Urals.

I remember the Cuyahoga River catching fire back in the 70s, and it's  still used as an example of pollution that has been eliminated by government regulations.

But it was caused by gasoline spilled into a storm sewer. Storm sewers do not route water through any treatment, so a similar fire could just as easily happen today.

And the best freshwater fishing I've had in my life was in Lake Erie during the years when Time magazine declared it a "dead lake".
