So I installed Windows 8 Consumer Preview...
« on: March 01, 2012, 10:11:18 PM »
I was bored so I decided to follow the instructions here to partition my drive so that I can dual boot with win 7 or win 8.  The install was fast and painless, the only problem I had was with my AMD video drivers but I found a fix for that pretty easily.

The interface is a lot like that of my android phone, you can flip from screen to screen with a mouse drag.  Other than the appearance, the only change I have noticed is that is seems to boot up much faster than win 7.

Let me know if it starts eating registry entries or system files.  I've had to replace 4-5 hard drives recently because of W7 Enterprise issues.  That number may actually be higher... I've lost count of the drives I shipped out to different locations this week.  I had to replace three today alone.  One of the employees in my office had his file association table disappear, another stopped working altogether.

I don't know if it's a combination of the hardware and software we're running, but I've never had to deal with this kind of volume before.  XP wasn't pretty, but it was stable.

I guess the mouse drag thing only works on the login screen.  The "metro" screen ( I think that's what it's called) looks really cheesy and tablet-like.   I was going to try to get used to navigating around on it tonight but I'm tired and it's too annoying.

I usually shut all that mess off.  I remember Vista came with a similar 'Aero' interface but I always shut that off because it took up too many resources.

I haven't seen it at all on W7E, but we have a custom image that goes on all our computers.  It could be disabled entirely.

  • If I agree with you, then we'll both be wrong.

How much space does it consume on the hard drive?

I partitioned 50gb for it.  I have 30gb free space on the partition after the install.

I don't think that will be possible in windows 8, the only way to access the start menu is to hover your cursor in the lower left corner of the screen until it appears as an option.  If you do the same in the upper left corner you go back to the metro screen.  It's kind of like they are treating the OS as just another app, it's weird.
