Snowe announces she won't seek re-election

Citing too much partisanship in Washington, Maine Sen. Olympia Snowe will not run for re-election, she announced Tuesday.

Snowe, a moderate Republican who was often a key swing vote on partisan issues, was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1994. She previously represented Maine's 2nd Congressional District in the U.S. House for 16 years.

"After 33 years in the Congress this was not an easy decision. My husband and I are in good health. We have laid an exceptionally strong foundation for the campaign, and I have no doubt I would have won re-election," she said in a statement.

I'd celebrate but who knows what Maine would put up to replace her.

If Obama wins re-election it won't matter who they elect. It is over.

Meh!

Any democrat has to be more conservative than she is.

Moderate, my ass.  When Dems have a more conservative voting record than her, she needs to GO.

She's probably the most conservative person in the state.

That speaks volumes.

Those were my first thoughts when I saw the Snowe story on Drudge last night. Hmmm... I wonder who the Donks are going to issue marching orders to and send up to Maine to grab this seat?

Well yeah that, but also, rumors of her inevitability may in fact have been over rated.  Maine had a GOP Senate primary challenger who decided to go Indy (a Tea-partier IIRC ).  This would have put her in a 3-way (sorry about the mental picture this might have caused) race.  With a strong dem and indy turnout she could have found her self on the proverbial windy corner.  This is how the current Governor (LePage) got in with only 38% of the vote. She may be loved by the party apparatchic but that might not have been enough in todays political climate to put her over the top.  She would not win the dems and the resurgent indys do not buy her tired line of go along to get along.  I think she finally saw the writing on the wall and decided to stick her finger in the eye of constituents.

Maine GOP party apparatchik is kind of like that of P-town North's.  You could fit them both into a phone booth.

Voting with Republicans in favor of the amendment were Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, both up for re-election, and Ben Nelson of Nebraska, who is retiring. Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, who only this week abandoned her re-election bid out of frustration with the polarized Congress, was the lone Republican to vote to defeat the amendment.

Democrats pounced on the symbolism of Snowe's decisions. "If Republicans keep this up, they're going to drive away independent voters, women and men, just as they are driving moderates out of their caucuses," said Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.

But Republicans kept one such senator in the fold on the vote, Snowe's fellow senator from Maine. Sen. Susan Collins kept all sides on edge until minutes before the vote, saying on the Senate floor that she was troubled that the administration could not assure her that faith-based self-insured organizations would be protected from the mandate to cover contraception.

"I feel that I have to vote for Sen. Blunt's amendment," she said.

Next Rhino to go should be Suzie Collins.  Margret Chase Smith must be rolling over in her grave.  However, we here in the Granite State have our own Mean Jean Shaheen. :thatsright:

At least Collins voted for Blunt's amendment.  My fellow alum (sssssh) isn't totally stupid.  Yet, at the same time, it wouldn't surprise me to hear that Jim DeMint got to her and threatened her with being shut out of any choice committee assignments in the next Congress (let's face it, the new blood in the Republican Party is coming from the TEA Party, and they all know it--Mitch McConnell probably won't be elected as Majority Leader).
