I quit my job due to anxiety/depression.

Probably the 7th or 8th time I've quite or dropped out of school due to this. I've felt worst in the past but things aren't all that good now either.

I'm looking for some kind of grocery store clerk type position or just stocking shelves in the mean time. My last job was retail sales related as well but it was computer hardware which is much more my type of things but the customer interaction and 1 hour commute each way was driving me crazy. A few years back when I was on some medication that was working and things looked really up I was working at a 7-11 as assistant manager / acting manager.

I'm on medication and see a psychiatrist, also have referral to a different therapist and group therapy group. I'm registered to go back to school this coming Sept and hope that by then things are better. They will have to be if I'm to take on the course load I have lined up. I HAVE to get myself some type of degree or another moving forward though. I'm living at home with my parents at 30 and they are about to retire soon so I NEED to get my own life started, or crash and burn trying. Would help me if I could get some friends or a girl friend but I've never managed to even get close to a girl let alone date. At least I have my smarts going for me and I've managed to save up about $70k in the past several years.

First of all I doubt he has $70 thousand dollars saved up. Lie. No assistant manager at a 7-11 will save that kind of cash - even if he isn't dating (I know the gals eat a lot, but $70k is a a lot of nachos!).

 I can believe he's living at home with his parents, classic leach.The part about their retirement is the key to the piece: He just got kicked out. He probably quit his job so he can stay a bit longer.

I've found this a very common, yet curious occurrence. Seems as they all sing the praises of urban living, with it's high population density, crime rates, access to socialized programs, and money-hemorrhaging mass transit systems. But, they seem to rarely practice what they preach. The list is long when it comes to stories the primitives spin about having long commutes from their wealthy suburbs, gated communities, and decadent houses with beautiful views of lakes that would fill a 1%er with envy.

We all find our niche at different times. I have known men who were still trying to find their way in life in their early 30s. You have a plan, and that's what's important.

It helps me to remind myself sometimes that nothing lasts forever. When you're depressed, and I have been, it seems that you are alone in the world, and things are bad. Really bad. But that passes, and things get better. They always do.

Getting a degree is a good plan. You are lucky you have smarts, as well as parents who apparently love you. I don't know if your parents mind your being home, still, but it's possible it's not that big a deal to them. A lot of young people have returned home to their parents in this bad economy. Just let them know that you appreciate them letting you stay (which I'm sure they know). They probably just want you to find your way in life and be happy. As long as you're making progress on your plans, that's probably all they want to see.

You have saved up a lot of money! That's great! You are a very resourceful, practical guy.

For depression, I've found that exercise is very important. It is very helpful for stress, and it raises my spirits some. Esp if it's a pretty day. A walking program or yoga works for me. The YMCA is inexpensive to join, and you can do a variety of things there. Women go there, too! It's hard to get moving when I'm depressed, but if I manage to do just something, it helps. I know your depression is serious, and I don't mean to make light of it. But exercise really does seem to help a lot of people with depression at least somewhat.

If you join the Y, men go to the Y, too! They play basketball and such. It takes time to make friends. But I think guys are activity-oriented, and sounds to me like it's a good start if you do some activity that other guys do, too. Going to a gym or the YMCA comes to mind. I had a guy talk to me once about how hard it was meeting any other men to make friends with in his new city. He'd go sit in a bar & drink, just to chat with other men. He had no hobbies or activities other than work, where he didn't have an opportunity to meet or work with other men, and drinking in bars. When I moved to a new city after age 30, the friendship thing was very tough for me. I don't make friends easily, and I don't naturally make the effort. I also had a time problem. But through work I made friends. So that today I have a few casual friends, and probably only one friend I'd call close. If I can do that, so can you!

You don't sound like you're in a good spot in your life to have a girlfriend, so that may be why you don't have one. But this will happen for you. If I recall the stats I've seen, almost all heterosexual men get married. You just have to be at the right place in your life, and willing to expend the effort, which your depression and circumstances right now may prevent, at least in your mind.

Things will get better. You have so much going for you and to be grateful for, that others don't have. So what if you're 30, and you'd planned on being all set by that age? It's not too late. What's important is that you know where you want to go and develop a plan for it. I hope you pursue your dreams. One day you will 50, and when you look back, you'll wonder how you could have possibly thought that 30 was old or too late to do this or that.

Let us know how it's going. Do you think it would be possible to not quit your next job, even if you don't like it? It's just my opinion, but I think it's helpful for someone to learn to stay somewhere, even when they don't want to. Maybe not every time, but sometimes. It helps to build a sort of sticktuitiveness and self-esteem to know that you stuck with it, when the going got rough. It also helps with the process of learning skills to cope with the depression while earning a living. I quit a number of jobs when I was younger, so that may be something that just comes with age. And also, an inability to quit (no one was available to help me out, if I'd quit!). Let us know how it goes. I wish you the best. I hope I wasn't too preachy or something, but I thought I had something to offer you on this. I've been there. It does get better.

It is going to kind of hard to do that seeing how he was able to work enough to save $70K. But if does go on disability he will need to shed about $68K before the government will give him anything.

In the industry I work in, if you change jobs more than once every ten years it's not looked upon very favorably, yet this guy thinks changing jobs more often than he changes underwear isn't going to be a problem?  Or living with his parents until he's 30?  Nah, women just FLOCK to guys like him.
