I'm trying to recall instances where there was a clear-cut front-runner in a presidential race this early.
All I can come up with is George Bush in 2004, William Clinton in 1996, Ronald Reagan in 1984, Richard Nixon in 1972, Lyndon Johnson in 1964.
These were all incumbent presidents.
But even incumbency was no guarantee the whole thing was wrapped up this early; Jimmy Carter and Vast Teddy in 1980, for example, where the incumbent barely got re-nominated.
I don't care if there's no Republican front-runner clear until the Republican convention; it makes the whole thing more exciting, and besides, being a late front-runner has historically been
no obstacle to election.
