There is a high correlation between so-called "jock" culture at the professional, college, and high school levels, and authoritarian right-wing viewpoints. Not an exact correlation, mind you...but a high one.

The social institutions of this country invest a massive amount of time, money, and effort into controlling and conditioning the population, to "manufacture consent" as Chomsky puts it. Can't have a population that is questioning, critical, or self-aware; that would be too dangerous to the powerful interests that run the show.

In America you achieve the effect of mass hypnosis by appealing to the citizen's inner troglodyte, and then point to everyone who doesn't drink the kool-aid as "wimps".

He's so right. I love baseball and watching a game, nothing else exists, it's almost an out of body experience. Forget about thinking, you're relieved of muscular responsibility for nine innings. Baseball might be why I was never interested in heroine or cocaine.

And the bit about arcane knowledge is also so true. If your brain gets restless while you're sitting there discorporated, lol, there's all these wonderful numbers you can play with. It's so satisfying, a measurable, rational universe, ambling along without actually moving -- it's always summer, everyone is always young. There's food and drink everywhere no matter what time it is. An avuncular voice tells stories and jokes and what to pay attention to without burdening us with his face. More than diversion, it's an awesome, efficient bubble, pre-natal regression with team colors. No wonder people describe baseball as heaven, there's no want there, either.

"Liberalism is an essentially feminine, submissive world view. Perhaps a better adjective than feminine is infantile. It is the world view of men who do not have the moral toughness, the spiritual strength to stand up and do single combat with life, who cannot adjust to the reality that the world is not a huge, pink-and-blue, padded nursery in which the lions lie down with the lambs and everyone lives happily ever after."

Once again, the idiot left believes whatever that pseudo- intellectual oaf Chomsky tells them, especially if it helps them feel even more smug and superior to everyone else than they normally feel.
You knew those losers would find some way to whine about the Super Bowl, the way they whine about everything else that's good in this country.

WTF would be a perfect world for these assholes? I guess one where no one excels and everyone is equally miserable. Mediocrity = Idiocracy  Hey its got electrolytes!  :stoner:
Indeed. A world in which progress and going the extra mile are things to be discouraged if not outright punished, and the very idea of being exceptional is discarded out of fear it might hurt the "Self- esteem" of others. In other words, a world of losers, with the DUmmies running everything.

I'm unusual in that I'm a heterosexual male not interested any more in professional sports. It has nothing to do with Chomsky. It has more to do with geography and philosophy.

I'm from Philly. My teams have constantly broken my heart. I've simply given up after 40 years. I can't get on those bandwagons any more.

Also, I find that pro athletes are, as a rule not worthy of my attention. There are a few exceptions, but not enough. Finally, I'm the father of two young daughters. Between dance, play practice, soccer, swimming, music lessons, girl scouts, etc., etc., I don't have the luxury of sitting down and watching a game.

But DUmmies? They can politicize anything. And get it all wrong in the process.

"Sports will be the opiates of the masses."

And of course we have Marx's "religion is the opiate of the masses."

We're also told the quest for material wealth is the opiate of the masses.

And mass-media is the opiate of the masses.

Entertainment is also the opiate of the masses.

And yet...

...these retards would ban all of these things but legalize the recreational use of opiates.

Exactly what I was going to say, coupled with:

Their perfect world would also include them in charge, and as such, not having to share in everyone else's misery.

It really intrigues me how they call conservatives authoritarian when we are the ones we constantly defend the constitution in  all aspects when they pick and choose from it when it fits their agenda and even then usually twist it and take it out of context.  We want the right to bare arms, free speak, and zero governmental control over religion.  JUST AS THE CONSTITUTION STATES!

I am always amazed when a big government Liberal says that conservatives believing in smaller government, personal liberty, and individuality are the totalitarians.  Just more proof that the Cult of Liberalism requires mental defects to join.

Sounds like these people were the ones who sucked at sports in the first place.

An entire psychological study could be made on that, and many other aspects of their childhood, alone. I think these were the rejects growing up. The ones that no one liked other than their weirdo friends and their parents telling them they were special. When they reached the age where responsibility was required, they couldn't handle it.

...and I'm not a snob, but most people grow the hell up, move on, and don't dwell on their past. These idiots are obviously not of that breed.

What is this jock culture DUmmies yammer about so much?  I remember high school, the outcasts were the ones that chose to be outcasts.  I remember my prinicipal in high school being astounded when he found out that out of 2000 students, almost 58% were somehow involved in athletics programs.  That would mean quite a few of the artists and hippies types were playing sports as well.  If band were to be counted, that percentage would be even higher.  "Jocks" could be found in the honor society, ROTC, and the FFA.

Sounds like these people were the ones who sucked at sports in the first place.

More like the ones that couldn't be bothered to try.  In ninth grade, the freshmen football team needed a defensive tackle.  I tipped the scales at all of 132 pounds when I volunteered to do that instead of third backup linebacker, I was the youngest and the lightest of a bunch of linebackers.  I was routinely outweighed by more than 50 pounds, and I routinely won the battle in the trenches. My sophomore year I was promoted over older and stronger players to starting will linebacker my JV season, coach said he would not have noticed me if I hadn't been willing to take on a job no one else wanted.
