Obama uses biblical scriptures to explain why Romney is wrong about the poor

At today's National Prayer Breakfast, President Obama indirectly responded to Romney's comments about the poor:

It’s also about the biblical call to care for the least of these –- for the poor; for those at the margins of our society.

To answer the responsibility we’re given in Proverbs to “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.” And for others, it may reflect the Jewish belief that the highest form of charity is to do our part to help others stand on their own.

Treating others as you want to be treated. Requiring much from those who have been given so much. Living by the principle that we are our brother’s keeper. Caring for the poor and those in need. These values are old. They can be found in many denominations and many faiths, among many believers and among many non-believers. And they are values that have always made this country great — when we live up to them; when we don’t just give lip service to them; when we don’t just talk about them one day a year. And they’re the ones that have defined my own faith journey.

...

Our goal should not be to declare our policies as biblical. It is God who is infallible, not us. Michelle reminds me of this often. (Laughter.) So instead, it is our hope that people of goodwill can pursue their values and common ground and the common good as best they know how, with respect for each other. And I have to say that sometimes we talk about respect, but we don’t act with respect towards each other during the course of these debates.

1. What I don't get about right wing fundie 'christians' is that they disregard Christ's

teachings!

Umm Jesus said for people to reach in their own pockets, he never said that anyone should be forced to give to the poor. As usual you do not understand what the message is.

2. Ding! Ding!! Ding!!! We have a winner!

Exactly, they disregard Christ's teachings, and muddle the scriptures to make up their own rules. As a Christian, the number one thing that I believe, the very basic element to Christianity, is that we should do what we can to help those that are less fortunate than we are.

And before someone bitches, NO, I don't think those beliefs are unique only to Christianity. But I think they should be fundamental to anyone who practices Christianity.

No, you are muddling the scriptures and making up your own rules. Jesus was talking about charity that comes from the heart, not charity at the point of a sword, or a gun today.

22. Ohhh...but that doesn't MEAN thuh govermint.

That's just individuals and churches and, you know, United Way.
Thuh govermint shouldn't be involved.
Except they should let us pray in schools.
And put the 10 commamunts in the courthouse.

Once again Jesus never said anything about forcing people to do anything. Jesus was very "pro choice" all of his teachings were aimed at people willingly doing what he asked, not forcing people to do it.

3. They cherry pick stuff from the Bible

to suit their purposes.

Helping those less fortunate than you isn't just a Christian thing. It should be basic human compassion.

You are cherry picking yourself. You read feed the poor and somehow get the idea that people should be forced to give.

33. They twist everything

They really are the epitome of evil.

No actually following what Jesus said, is not twisting. You goons can not understand the concept of using your own resources to help people, you would rather take your neighbor's cash, hand it to the poor, then pat yourself on the back for being so compassionate.

21. This is a message that the Democrats need to grab and cling to!

In essence, they MUST cling to their bibles/Torahs/Korans or whatever!

We lost working class whites especially because we lost that message, tying moral justice to addressing the needs of the poor and working class.

yes, by all means cling to a false message.

I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.

Of course.  Now there's a Democrat in the White House.

They deny the existence of God,they mock Jesus at every turn, any reference to Christianity is met with a demonic hatred yet they claim to understand Scripture. :banghead:

Jesus told all mankind that they were sinners and that they need to repent and follow Him.

Fact: Conservatives, especially Christian conservatives, give more than liberals.
Fact: Liberals love to talk a good game about helping the poor, but are often nowhere to be found when push comes to shove.
Fact: Liberal social programs have been disastrous for lower income people, but the only solution liberals put forward is more liberal social programs.
Fact: if you really give a damn about someone's situation, you'll contribute your time or energy to help.  You won't write to some idiot politician, hoping that eventually there will be a new law.

This from the multi-millionaire 0bama that gave a whole 1% to charity last year. That guy?

Yeah Liberals are real good at giving other peoples money and hard work to those that don't, their own not so much.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

They, like most ultra- liberals, only treat the Christian faith/ the Bible with any sort of reverence if they feel they can achieve some kind of gain through twisting and perverting its message enough to fit their agenda.
Any other occasion, they mock and blaspheme Jesus for laughs, and dismiss all of His followers as a bunch of dumb rednecks.
As all of us here have pointed out, the calls for helping the poor in the Bible were meant to refer to people giving to/ helping the poor out of their own free will, rather than through the sort of mandatory wealth redistribution that Obama and the DUmmies desire.
A part of the reason for this is that, when someone gives to the needy (Be it money, food, time, or anything else) purely of one's own free will rather than because they are forced to do so by the government, it reflects well on the sort of person they are and the sort of outlook they have. In contrast, there is no charity involved in the sort of mandatory wealth redistribution that Obama and the DUmmies desire. In fact, it actually tends to make people more resentful towards the idea of helping the needy.
Another important point is that when one in some way helps the needy of one's own free will, they can usually see the results of their actions, and know that their money, service, etc., is being used wisely and in a way consistent with their faith. In contrast, with the government using mandatory wealth redistribution, the person has absolutely no say in how their money is used, and it could be used in a way the person disapproves of (i.e. funding a Planned Parenthood clinic).

DUmmy, the number one thing, the basic element of Christianity is that God sent his Son to die on the cross for our sins, that way we can join Him in Heaven if we accept Him as our Savior.  Something like that is usually considered the number one thing.  Stuff like helping those less fortunate or keeping liquor stores closed on Sunday falls a little farther down the list.
We will make America strong again. We will make America proud again. We will make America safe again. And we will make America great again.

Jesus told us to give to the poor.  He never told us to have Caesar steal money from "The Rich," our neighbors, those we envy, or companies in order to give to the poor.  Of course, you have to actually read His Word before you can figure that out.   ::)

And if we are to "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves..." then maybe Obama should start doing so.  At this point, that group of humans would mostly be those that can be legally murdered for any reason, or no reason.  Strangely, I don't see Obama  or any of the DUmmies "speaking up for those that TRULY cannot speak for themselves."  Hypocrites.

No, you lost working class whites when you started telling people that didn't have anything more than their neighbors that they're neighbors were oppressed and they were the cause of the oppression.

Then, you couldn't stop it.  Justice basically means that one gets what one deserves for their own actions.  You perverted that.  You decided you wanted "economic justice" where you decided who was deserving of what wealth, no matter who created it.  You created "Social Justice" with a meaning so amorphous, that it essentially means whatever you want it to mean.  Now you have "moral justice".  I guess that somehow, and someway, you intend to enforce your own special code of right and wrong and use punishments on those that won't toe your line.

You call yourself a liberal.  I call you a despicable would-be tyrant.

Indeed.
For much of last summer, on a conservative blog I frequent, I found myself (And the other members of the blog, as well) heatedly debating with a repulsive, ultra- liberal, Commmunist troll named "Gunther." He was a pseudo- intellectual, massively self- righteous and hypocritical German Eurotrash loser who would routinely trash America and basically any form of decency, and use literally any post on the blog as an excuse to try and push Communism on us and promote his borderline psychotic obsessions with class warfare and identity politics.
When talking about his own ideas for how he thought things should go in America, he'd use flowery terms like "Equality" and "Social justice," yet in pretty much every post he made, I could tell that were he ever to gain a position of power, he would rapidly become a massively oppressive and corrupt tyrant who'd gladly trample people's basic human rights to create a nightmarish "For your own good" dictatorship. He proposed policies that would blatantly violate people's 1st, 2nd, 5th, and 14th Amendment rights, and when I and the others called him out on that fact, he'd say something like, "Your Consititution is an old and outdated document written by rich white slaveowners. It must be discarded and replaced with a new one to ensure (Insert Communistic class warfare gibberish here)."
Fortunately, he is gone now. The moderator at that blog finally got tired of his crap and banned him. He attempted to return a couple times under fake account names, but got kicked out each time, and finally stopped altogether.

"an opinion of private men different from that of the catholick and orthodox church" [Johnson], c.1200, from O.Fr. heresie (12c.), from L. hæresis, "school of thought, philosophical sect," used by Christian writers for "unorthodox sect or doctrine," from Gk. hairesis "a taking or choosing, a choice," from haireisthai "take, seize," middle voice of hairein "to choose," of unknown origin, perhaps from PIE *ser- "to seize" (cf. Hittite šaru "booty," Welsh herw "booty").
According to the Bible, "know" means "yes."

Nice piciture of Bonnie Fwank.

Wearing a suit jacket that way is as gay as draping sweater arms over the front of your shoulders, or tying jacket arms around your waist.

All those should be restricted by law to women. They're worse than wearing a non-camo fanny pack.
