Squirrels in my attic

I think i have a problem :O My two cats continually stare at a corner of the ceiling in one room. Recently, I've been hearing the clattering of little feet on my roof too. I went outside to see if i could find any holes in the soffits, etc. The vents are all barricaded off from varmints, but i did find one area with a hole big enough for a squirrel to wiggle through. I think this is where they are getting in. This is so disheartening. I've lived in my home for 16 years. The first 10 were pretty much problem free, but now it's been an ongoing litany of problems: roof leaks, mold, termites, and now these frigging squirrels! It's just me and I don't know if i can handle all this anymore by myself  (sorry for venting).

Anyway, has anyone ever had a squirrel removal done? We have lots of trees, as such, lots of squirrels. How much does it cost to do a squirrel fix?

1. It's usually a two part fix

I know someone that had a bad squirrel problem. I think that you need to get them out and close the hole. I think that they get them out with traps. Not sure how much it costs.

2. We had the same problem a few weeks ago

darn thing got in the garage through a cracked window, and it's open to the attic. Once we figured out it was in there, we closed up it's entry point, and then we started hazing it. I sent my son up to the attic 3 times before we got it to move out of there. He'd just make a lot of noise, poke around in the corners and generally just make it feel unwelcome. I went through the house a few times a day banging on the ceiling hard enough to make noise, but not put holes in the ceiling. (well, just one..) The third time he went up there, it had left so we closed up the attic and hoped it was gone for good.

nope. It found a space under the old shelving in the back of the garage, and I heard it a few days later. We did the hazing again several times a day until it finally decided it wasn't worth the racket we were making and it moved out.  we opened the large garage door each time so it had a very large exit to make for.

it's rats, yikes! the guy went up in the attic space and found lots of (fresh) feces. they're coming friday to trap and seal any holes they find. they only do this once and it's costing me $285, is that reasonable?

8. I don't know how to get rid of rats, save poison, and if you have animals, you're probably better off with a pro.

I do know that coyote piss works great for squirrels--they will run like they've been scalded and never come back if you seal up the hole, get rid of any branches where they jump to the roof and find their way in, and, to be on the safe side, spray a bit of the refreshing substance around when it's time to come in out of the cold.

You can buy the stuff at feed stores. It does work!

10. We had rats in out 6 flat condo building in the basements of our first floor units.

We called Orkin and they wanted a 12 month agreement (I wasn't there) so we signed up. It was, IIRC, 200 bucks a month???

A couple months go by and still we have rats. The poor woman on the first floor was beside herself because she slept in the basement. She could hear the little (big?) f-ckers crawling in her walls.

So she calls me and I call Orkin. I have the manger come out. We pull the poison lock-boxes and open them to find none of the block were chewed on AT ALL. I ask why they use blocks and not pellets. He tells me they "like" the blocks - it looked like the same stuff - bluish green.

Anyway, he tells me to sit tight and give it a couple weeks to see what happens. 2 more weeks go by and poor woman on the first floor is ready to move to a hotel. I say **** this and go buy a couple big boxes of pellets. Rats are gone in a week's time.

I did warn the nice lady there might be a smell for a few days but it's better than rats. Never heard or smelled from the f-ckers again.

Called Orkin and told them to sue us. Never heard from them again either.

We do have dogs in the building but we were careful to place the poison where they couldn't possibly get to it (under hot tub enclosures behind walls etc). I noted where everything was and policed up the boxes when my mission was complete.

9. That seems like a reasonable amount to me.

I have experience with those awful night sounds of little feet and chewing - over years and years at our ranch house. We had people out to find where they were getting in, but could not find any places. Finally replaced the roof and covered the roof vents - and so far, no sounds.

 I agree, the infestation can happen in days, get them quick and less overall work.  Oh, and poison works. We live near lots of natural land and the associated lots of varmints. I tired the trap thing the first year and it was a miserable failure, much like our first historic black president. Then I went to the D-Con "make them thirsty and get the hell out of the house to find water and die outside" poison boxes. Do some die under the house or points unknown? Yes but rarely and eventually it has to happen. It's just a matter of time and numbers.

You know, sir, I live way out in the country, in a very old house, on property that teems with wildlife.

There are four cats here, although there used to be more.

Ever since I've had cats here, while there's wildlife outdoors and all that, there's never been a single instance of wildlife--field mice, rats, snakes--inside the house (unless a cat has dragged something inside, but that's another story).  Hell, there aren't even insects inside the house.

Cats are great nuisance-repellents.

Funny thing here we have had a couple episodes of hearing tapping in the ceiling, not gnawing but tapping like a bird makes  on wood for the last few weeks.  

Both huge Maine Coon cats alerted me to this, turned down the sound on the TV and then we heard it.  I cannot convince hubby there is something alive in the ceiling.   When he hears the noise he goes about banging on the ceiling with my cane and figures it is the house settling.     I just roll my eyes and go along with him, but I know this is not natural.

He raised in apartments in the city and the first home he ever bought and lived in has not yet got use to the idea we cannot call a maintenance man for free. OH the Joy of home ownership for a person that had a landlord at their beck and call 24/7 all their life until he met me and we bought our home.    Poor man had no idea of what owning a home was about, he has learned it is a money pit, he was now responsible for paying for everything.

What is that noise the cats he and I hear?? Not all the time, just occasionally, is it in fact the double wide settling, will both haves of the home break apart and fall into each other?

Last couple night we have been awaken by the dogs and cats, puppy raising havoc pulling our pillows out from under our heads and cats 20 pounds each racing about driving the dogs nuts.

With Hubby working 6-10 hour days a week he is not happy when I suggested that as this area was semi-wet land perhaps we were under a sink hole gearing up to collapes.

What the Hell, the neighbors of my Mom had their home ceiling collaps as there was a bee hive weighing over 100 pounds in the attic crawl space, must have been there 40 years.   25 years later we all talk about the excitement that day.   Firefighters were being swarmed, police with loudspeakers warning neighbors to stay indoors, occasionally there is excitement in a small town.  

Never know what is above or below or in the home until all hell breaks out.  The Joys of the American dream, home owenership.

You go to the pound and adopt a couple of the gnarliest, roughest cats from-the-wrong-side-of-the-tracks that you can find.  Some that have been around the block a few times.  Missing half an ear, half a tail.  Put them to work, they have a blast.  Keep a shovel and garbage bag handy.  Problem solved.  Been there.

THANK YOU, kind of brought a tear to my eye.     I spent time yesterday looking for that video--I had no luck finding it.

You see my Dad, half dead in the hospital heard this song and laughed so hard he darn near ruptured the staples in his chest.     Never forget that it cheered him up enough to go home and live another year.

Laughter and joy is strong medicine, I don't know how it works, chemical, mental or whatever, Laughter in the face of death can prolong life somehow while doom and gloom seems to hasten death.

When I was still living at home, we had a mouse up in the attic and a big, fat lazy tomcat in the house.  Dad hauled his ass up there and left him sealed in with a bowl of water and no food.  It took three days but the mouse ended up being dinner.  I read somewhere that female cats are better mousers.  I dunno-we had our little terrier Dom kill nine mice in our backyard the first year we brought him home from the pound and they have never returned.

I dunno-we had our little terrier Dom kill nine mice in our backyard the first year we brought him home from the pound and they have never returned.

Well I hope to hell the dead mice never returned :lol: :lol: :lol:   

 :rofl: No little mice ghosts here.  More importantly, no avenging mice family members.

shanti, close up the hole they use to get in.
Set a couple hav-a-hart traps.
Release them outside.
