 A right wing extremist I know said this about Obama:
He promised to fix the economy, but has done nothing.

My response was that it was very clever of him to blame Obama for a disaster caused by Republican ideology and the implementation of that ideology. And that even to this date, Republicans are sabotaging Obama at every turn.

He immediately said, "Look, if you're going to lay blame on Republicans, let's just stop discussing this now."

Typical Repukes. They f*ck things up, then blame others.

2. I had a similar conversation with a friend that went further right after Obama was elected

A friend of mine I've known a long time ( back when he was center left, and I was center-right ) His complaint was nearly the same as the one you spoke to mentioned. Also he likes to say "He hasn't DONE anything!" a lot. Then speaks of how he's sick of Republicans and Democrats arguing. I try to say why, just as you did, the reasons the arguments are taking place, and what's at stake, and who is trying to do what, or prevent, as the case applies. He then immediately snaps and gets combative "He's gonna take our guns away, just you wait and see!!" WTF???

trying to even understand, must less try to convince republicans otherwise.

I know SO many really great, really kind, decent, hard working and giving people who are republicans, and there just is something about how they are wired that they just have this visceral hatred of pretty much any democrat. It isn't just BO, it is any D.

I know people who hated Clinton with a vengence when he was president, who now don't think he is all that bad.

They just want Rs in office, bottom line.

They have a talking point ( or points ) and are able to spew them, but since they are low-info types or ideological hacks, cannot defend them, and get mad as hell if they're put in a position when they have to...Since there's nothing there. Referring to the neo-rightie friend of mine I was speaking about above, I'm aamazed at how poorly prepared he is to think things through. He's so easy to lick in a debate because he's so willingly uninformed. When challenged, his answer is, 9-times out of 10, "I'm just sayin'!". What's THAT mean? He must use that term a dozen times/day everytime he gets in a fix.

Actually I think most of us here would consider ourselves conservative. "Progressives" don't always have a D behind their name. The last true conservative we had was Ronald Reagan. Every other president since then has grown government that has regulated more and more of our lives (light bulbs...they're going to force us to use light bulbs with mercury in them to save the planet...wait til those hit the landfills).
