 Cometh a shitstorm?

The media's disregard for common people is distressful.

http://www.martinigod.com/

A friend sent me an article about increasing homelessness, saying that "a shitstorm was coming". That got me thinking about an article my wife referenced today, and I sent him this response:

She saw a news item today, saying something to the effect that the average age of a car in California is the highest ever, at 10.4 years, or something like that. This is not shocking, given the shittiness of the economy; it is a bit surprising, however, from one standpoint: TV, movies, and the news all make it seem like everybody, with the exception of Martinigod and his friends, gets a new car every year, or two at the longest. Hours, and hours, and hours are spent each year talking about new car sales; yet, in my world, hardly anyone gets a new car. The 10.4 figure seems to conform about right with the experience of people I've known in the real world over the course of my life.

I hate the media, and Hollywood, and TV, and the news, and the powers that be, and all those who make it seem like everyone in America - because they have money to invest - is rich, and has a new car, and actually cares about things like investments, and retirement funds. It's all bullshit. In the real world, only a small percentage of people have any of those things; and the media, and Hollywood, and TV, and the news, and the powers that be don't EVER talk about those people, i.e. the vast majority of people in the country. Maybe, if said shitstorm does come, something will change for the good.

He hates it !

Wishing bad things on people because he can't have what they have.  Not nice at all.

Only 3 replies.  His whine is the best.   :-)

Poor track guy seems to be ate up with hate.

What a shame.
I tend to avoid that sort of thing.
Seems to make ones life really miserable.
Then again, DUmmies lives revolve around miserable.
Track DUde needs to try harder.
Then-Chief Justice John Marshall observed, “Between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos.”

John Adams warned in a letter, “Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet, that did not commit suicide.”

In the real world, only a small percentage of people worry about what other people have! I live in that world. I don't give a shit what anyone has but me.
"Liberalism is an essentially feminine, submissive world view. Perhaps a better adjective than feminine is infantile. It is the world view of men who do not have the moral toughness, the spiritual strength to stand up and do single combat with life, who cannot adjust to the reality that the world is not a huge, pink-and-blue, padded nursery in which the lions lie down with the lambs and everyone lives happily ever after."

Actually it's not the economy, it's the cost of new cars/trucks in general. I just can't afford one, and probably never will, so I bought used.

I always by used.  What's the point in buying something when the value drops faster than Obama's approval rating.

It was a shartstorm.

There are a couple of other reasons for that as well.

California doesn't require smog checks on pre-1981 vehicles, so better to keep the ancient POS running as long as possible.

Next, it's more difficult for an illegal to prove residency in order to buy/finance a vehicle, so a lot of the immigrant population goes to local lots and gets a used vehicle.  Since older vehicles tend to be easier (read: less computer crap) to maintain, that's also working in their favor.

I wish it were pre 1981 but it is 1974 and older. The law was 25 years from current date. In 1999 they stopped that and froze the smog fees at 1974. It was just too good an income stream for the state to keep the 25 year rule in lace. The state also set a floor on working vehicles by giving any car that runs and is currently registered $1000. My first car was a 1963 VW Bug I bought for $100. It ran but was ugly and many good times were had in it. The kids of today will not be seen in such a vehicle and emand their parents buy them a very nice first car to crash/blow up the motor/get stolen.

So do I - I shoot for vehicles fresh off-lease. They are maintained as part of the lease, and the miles tend to be low.

Then I (ab)use the vehicle until it is beyond repair.

Gee, all those old shitboxes rolling around on Kalifornica's roads couldn't have anything to do with bloated UAW wages contributing to the sky high cost of new vehicles, could it?

That's 4 years old too. I believe the last "adder" (the extra cost for union wages) I saw for GM cars was $3000 or more per car/truck.

Ya the 2004 Hundai we bought back in October was a $20-$24K car (ours is LOADED) when new but got it for just under 8K with all the taxes/fees.
The car is so damn solid it's incredible. Our 96' Exploder is garbage compared to it.
