Dog-Sized Rat Found at Bronx Foot Locker?
« on: January 06, 2012, 10:38:55 AM »
Quote
I saw enough giant rodents as a kid growing up in The Bronx, but nothing like this monstrosity. And besides, most of them were of the two-legged variety.

This could be total bullshit, but hey, it’s New York, kiddies.

Yesterday someone Tweeted this photo of a giant monster rat, supposedly discovered at a Foot Locker in the Bronx. You might recognize this guy, as he bears a striking resemblance to the 3-foot-long beast that was stabbed with a pitchfork in Brooklyn last year. That one was believed to be a Gambian pouched rat, and may have been someone’s escaped pet. However, it wasn’t the first one spotted in that area, and locals believed they were multiplying faster than Gremlins taking a bath.

Here’s the guy who tweeted it originally, with the photo. ...

Wonder if it found sneakers to fit?  :-)

Lookit that poor little guy. Looks like he bared his sole and got a one-way trip to the trash heap for his trouble.

I'm sure the guy that killed him feels like a heel now.

Yeah. You can't see it, but his tongue is hanging out in embarrassment. He looks like the kinda guy who will go home and liberally lace his coffee with single malt.

What, people have never been to the Post Office before?

from the shape of the head... looks more like a Nutria. its a different rodent that overpopulates in swamps.

possible true story: this picture could have been from say Miami (next to the everglades). the rodent came in for some new "water moccasins" to wear to the beach. who knows.

what ever it is, it's got big balls!

Andrew Zimmern would probably eat it.

Gambian pouched rat...any kin to the Kenyan pouched rat in the Whitehouse?

I'm surprised the rat is dead. In the area the rats tend to become politicians.

I think Rugnuts is right and JohnnyReb nailed it. That's no Norway rat. NYC is infested with Gambian pouched rats that probably were escaped pets originally.

Remind me to never visit NYC again -- even if that's a fake, it's too much for me.

How much money do you suppose it would cost NYC to exterminate the rats????

Why for instance doesn't the city put a bounty on those critters, by size, age, sex, and weight.   A whole new industry here. Give the homeless a chance to make some money, the rat infested tenements will be rat free in a week, hospitals and schools rat free,

Logistics here, what to do with all the dead rats, they could feed the non poisoned ones to the carnivores at the zoo,
I wonder how much a bear or tiger eats of meat in just one day????

One would have to find a way to cull out the poisoned ones from the head bopped ones or sell small cages to bring in live ones.   I am sure someone would come up with a way to turn the hides that are water proof and tough as heck into warm garments or light weight covers for arms to the military.

Other then that the only way to rid NYC of rats is to hire a flute player in a spandex outfit to draw out the rats and pipe them into the East river.

"buck-a-rat"

No, say you find a nest with 15 baby's and Mom, that should be worth $25 bucks or more, if alive $50. for the lot.

You see Rugnuts, the  prebreaders are the ones we need to catch first. Every baby caught is really worth more then a full grown male rat.  It is the baby's and the mothers we need to catch first-----highest price for them, Male rats half of that.

Huge problem for NYC, 4 times the human population, they are everywhere.   They have little fear of humans as they coexist with them.   Rats have no toilets or wash their paws, they spread horrid disease where ever they go.

The small Rats that we call Mice are just little fellers that unless you have a cat go unnoticed, until then they are climbing and peeing on the dishes and flat ware in the kitchen, all over the bathroom, spreading their pee in the cosmetic or on a bar of soap.  Froliking in the baby's crib, running across the furniture and peeing on everything---mice pee allot.

This is a big problem, if the health laws were relaxed a bit and restaurants and food vender's could go to the SPCA and get a couple of Rat Killers, but no, no cats allowed in any area of food for sale, sorry they say but cats have owners and Rats are free lance.---------------------BTW Deadely rat poison is allowed near food in a restaurant but a Cat to catch them is considered a health hazard.

I would feel safe eating in a restaurant that had 2 or 3 well behaved cats, those that just sat and watched out the  the window or behind the counter while customers were dining.  I would come back for a meal knowing that there would be no rodent pee or poop in my dinner, or no new hire mistook the rat poison for salt.
