Army Reservist In Hot Water Over Ron Paul Speech

An Afghanistan war veteran is in trouble for giving a political speech while in uniform at a caucus night rally with Ron Paul on Tuesday in Iowa.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Army Reserve told TPM on Wednesday that Cpl. Jesse Thorsen may have violated military policy when he wore his fatigues on stage and praised the Texas congressman’s presidential bid.

Thorsen’s commander is now looking into the speech and will figure out what to do next, said the spokeswoman, Maj. Angel Wallace.

The Des Moines-based soldier served in Afghanistan but hasn’t been on active duty since October, Wallace said. However, he still serves a weekend a month and two weeks a year as a reservist and may be deployed to Afghanistan again in about a year.

2. If he serves a weekend a month he is in the guard

lazy reporters and all that.

And yes, it gets really confusing with the Guard... they are on duty while on drill, otherwise, no, they are not. Why they are looking into it, and why they might as well let it go. UNLESS that is, he was on drill THIS WEEKEND.

Dearest Nadin,

No dumbass, he is a reservist.  You know the reserves?  Guard = state, Reserves = DoD.     He wore his uniform he is in trouble.  Period.

It's the uniform dear Nada, the uniform.

She will never learn to keep her trap shut and just let us think she is a real DUmbass. She will always open it and prove us all correct.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

FYI, Department of Defense Directive 1344.10, dated February 19, 2008, covers the permissible political activities for uniformed service members.

Quote
It is DoD policy to encourage members of the Armed Forces (hereafter referred to as “members”) (including members on active duty, members of the Reserve Components not on active duty, members of the National Guard even when in a non-Federal status, and retired members) to carry out the obligations of citizenship. In keeping with the traditional concept that members on active duty should not engage in partisan political activity, and that members not on active duty should avoid inferences that their political activities imply or appear to imply official sponsorship, approval, or endorsement, the following policy shall apply:

    >snip<

4.1.2. A member of the Armed Forces on active duty shall not:
4.1.2.1. Participate in partisan political fundraising activities (except as permitted in subparagraph 4.1.1.7.), rallies, conventions (including making speeches in the course thereof), management of campaigns, or debates, either on one’s own behalf or on that of another, without respect to uniform or inference or appearance of official sponsorship, approval, or endorsement. Participation includes more than mere attendance as a spectator. (See subparagraph 4.1.1.9.)

        >snip<

4.1.2.5. Speak before a partisan political gathering, including any gathering that promotes a partisan political party, candidate, or cause.
4.1.2.6. Participate in any radio, television, or other program or group discussion as an advocate for or against a partisan political party, candidate, or cause.

        >snip<

4.1.2.15. Attend partisan political events as an official representative of the Armed Forces, except as a member of a joint Armed Forces color guard at the opening ceremonies of the national conventions of the Republican, Democratic, or other political parties recognized by the Federal Elections Committee or as otherwise authorized by the Secretary concerned.

Attending a rally in uniform, giving a partisan speech in favor of a candidate in uniform, endorsing a candidate while in uniform, all of this violates the guidance.

13. Actually, the guy may well be in the Army Reserve. As I'm sure you know, the ANG (Air Nat'l Guard)

View profile
and the Nat'l Guard (the Army one) are separate distinct entities from the Air Force and Army Reserves. And yes, there are requirements for many reserve members to perform weekend duties plus two weeks annually.

Any number of google sites can help clear up any ahem confusion about these. Perhaps the lazy reporter did in fact do some research.

You might even ask hubby if he ever had two week Navy Reservists join his unit. I know I did. You know, I'm sure, that there was a program of two years active duty, then two years active reserves (drill weekends plus the two weeks), then the two years inactive component for the total six year obligation when one enlists.

Obamanaut must be an older gent, the enlistment contract has been eight years rather than six for a rather long time now.
