Native Americans Say "Occupy" Terminology Is Offensive

http://www.truth-out.org/campaign-decolonize-native-americans-say-occupy-terminology-offensive/1325089484

The Campaign to "Decolonize" Oakland: Native Americans Say "Occupy" Terminology Is Offensive

-snip-

But now there's an effort by Native American activists in Oakland to get rid of “Occupy” and replace it with “Decolonize” - as in “Decolonize Oakland.” They say the term “occupy” is offensive in light of the brutal history of occupation by early colonizers and the United States government. Native Americans in Seattle, Albuquerque, Portland and Sedona have launched similar campaigns.

The name change is proving contentious at Occupy Oakland, with some protesters accusing Native Americans of guilt tripping in the name of supporting the oppressed. But cut through the chatter, and the basic point seems to be this: Occupy doesn't want to give up the brand.

-snip-

Native Americans tribes were brutally “occupied" by Spanish and English colonizers. Later, the United States government waged war on the Native American tribes and forced them into camps or reservations. More than 90 percent of North America’s indigenous population was wiped out by “occupiers,” either through war or the spread of disease.

-snip-

As a Native American, “it’s nauseating to hear the word ‘occupy’ over and over again.'" Gali said. "We need to occupy this, we need to occupy that. It’s the modern day colonial language.”

-long snip and video-

I'm all for changing the name to decolonize

3. Sorry, but this is just incredibly stupid.

And it's the sort of nitpicky, pathetic bullshit that makes the left a joke, by going into hysterics any time anyone, anywhere finds something "offensive."

I find TruthOut offensive: therefore, they MUST immediately shut down!

Pretty much sums up the DUmps feelings on everything they don`t like.

10. +1

This is anal-retentive rhetorical nit-picking at the molecular level and is just flat-out ridiculous.

I agree but it is what you leftists started.

26. have a little respect

your un/righteous indignation appears to be "the sort of nitpicky, pathetic bullshit" you are accusing others of.

if we don't understand or agree with the complaint, why bash it?

"decolonize" doesn't really make sense to me but gawd knows Native Americans HAVE A BONE TO PICK for a reason

8. oh come on

there must be a line somewhere that the political correctness and banning of certain words comes to an end because of being too ridiculous to contemplate, and this is surely a case of that.

Unless it is something a conservative says like Macaca.

17. Hostility?

The people finally have a Movement that has caught fire around the world and you think it's "hostile" when someone (meaning you) tries to throw water on it over something so petty?

Really?

Delusion just found a new definition.

41. Let's be real, ok?

Occupy is not going "just use another word."

I'd suggest instead, that if you are going through life, looking to be "offended," you are likely to find "offense" where none was intended. Native Americans are part of The 99%, please don't try to co-opt or divide, it is totally unproductive or in any of our best interests.

in some of the replies above...

If this took the form of Native Americans (or any other group, really) having a problem with a word being used to describe a RW movement, the pendulum would be swinging in the other direction here.

Everybody would be FOR the outraged group's right to be outraged and incensed.

"DAMN those scum-sucking Teabaggers!!! Who the hell do they think they ARE, anyway???" This is pretty much the tone of what we'd be seeing.

OK, so the Native Americans are pissed. OK, so some people think it's a trivial issue. Fine.

But the vitriol (and justification for it) against their feelings is just nauseating.

PS...and much like some people had/have a problem with the word "Homeland" in "Homeland Security", giving them unpleasant mental associations with Nazi Germany's "Fatherland", the very first thing to come to my mind upon hearing the word "occupy" is the German occupation of Europe. I can't help it.

There has to be a better word/phrase for it...

Which is of course ignored.

I seem to remember something from DU that proclaimed "Nit Pick" as a racially devisive word.
You see, I don't care you how feel.  I really don't.  More importantly, neither does anyone else.  Only about 200 people on a planet of 7 billion actually care about your feelings, and that's if you're lucky.  The sooner you grasp this lesson, the better off you will be.  And since almost no one gives a damn what you do, say, think, or feel, appealing to your feelings when you encounter differences of opinion is not only illogical, but useless.

The word "Occupy" was never part of the lexicon of the conflict involved, this is pure attention-whoring by the Native American activists.

Hmmmmm.

One wonders what the #03 top primitive of 2011 thinks of this, given his 1/64th heritage.

What are "native Americans"?

Are they the prehistoric people who were driven out and killed by the modern Indians?

Which came first? Indians or bootleg smokes? Indians or rigged casino games?

This phony moonbat outrage is how we got horrid, awkward terms like "councilperson".

Truthout as usual, FAILS to do their research.  Nothing like offensive words to fan DUmmy anger.

Idiots.

I was riding down the highway a few months ago when I spied a billboard proclaiming

OCCUPY ALCATRAZ

Of course I laughed.  Then I looked it up when I got home.  I was hoping it was local.  I want to photograph moobats.   :-)

I hate wikipedia as a reference but you get the idea.  Fake outrage.   :whatever:

The clash of PC verbage does make me laugh.

But the Native American use of "decolonize" is silly. History happens. Are the barbarian hordes who conquered the roman empire going to withdraw back to Russia? No.

There are two or three hundred thousand Indians and 300 million Europeans...sorry but no one is going anywhere.
The thing to do is to stop the whine and earn a living. No one is going to fix you boo boo. No one is going to leave.

In the game of life native Americans were dealt a losing hand. that leaves only one thing to do...
Deal with it.

There is no way to sugar coat this. all the bad guys and all the good guys are dead. This is history and for all the liberals who hate America and whine about our historical treatment of the Indians...none of them are leaving. If the only sympathetic ear you have isn't going to do what you want, then its time for "Plan B." Get a job.

If anyone should be offended, I would say it is UGP, who, as everyone knows, is a human female occupied by a male panther.

How do you get more 1% than that?
