PSA: Don't be screwin' around in the winter weather
« on: December 21, 2011, 09:32:13 AM »
Monday I was at home minding my own business, not bothering anyone. The day was overcast but around 11:00 am the pager for the local volunteer FD went-off with its tell-tale intonations: Our station was being called to motor vehicle accidents 25 miles away because the 2 nearest cities were overwhelmed.

After the 45 minute response time we got on-scene to see a silver Ford Expedition on its side. The local commander was already there and the driver was non-emergent. Still, he was wandering around in a daze, shocked. The contents of his vehicle were strewn down the length of the accident scene including personal effects, groceries and a number of holiday gifts half-torn from their wrappings.

Elsewhere the FDs were dealing with a 3-car pile-up and we were sent down range to assist Colorado State Patrol for other accidents reported and still occurring. We happened upon 2 more spin-outs and observed another from the opposite side of I-70.

An elderly couple rolled their car multiple times. Seatbelts or not an 80-something year old body cannot withstand that sort of shock.

They turned the local Post Office into an emergency operations center and the school (where my bunlet attends) was converted into a makeshift shelter as the number of people--minus those being transported to hospitals--turned into a refugee shelter for the now-vehicleless masses awaiting friends and family to pick them up. Within 2 hours their numbers pushed into the double digits.

All the accidents that resulted in all of this occurred within the space of 30 minutes.

The fog had rolled-in and because it was sub-freezing the highway became a sheet of ice.

* DO NOT TAKE ROAD CONDITIONS FOR GRANTED - You cannot tell the difference between wet pavement and ice until you have lost control of your vehicle.

* DO NOT PUT FAITH IN YOUR VEHICLE - As I said, the first vehicle was an Expedition, the spin-out we observed was a Jeep 4 x 4. It does not matter what your vehicle's weight, center of gravity, wheelbase or tire-width measure out to, if there is a sheet of ice between you and the road you got bupkiss.

* DO NOT PUT FAITH IN YOURSELF - Every retard on his head swore he knew what he was doing and that he was a good driver. The people who said, "I don't think I can do this" were safely parked on the side of the road or at the Waffle House having coffee. Waffle House has OK coffee, go get some.

* DO NOT PUT FAITH IN THE OTHER DRIVERS - A spinning car swats other cars that get in its way. You cannot get out of their way and they cannot get out of your way if your lose control. It's icy, remember? Stop being a retard.

* PAY ATTENTION - If you see fog and the temp is below 32-degrees put 2 + 2 together enough to realize the ice is mere minutes from forming. It's not if, it's when. Plain physics. Nothing will make that change.

* PULL THE **** OVER - Road crews will be along to scrape and/or salt the road and/or the other idiots will churn up the ice for you but I promise you: the hour you spend sitting there listening to today's lite hits on the radio is far, far less than the time you will spend A) dealing with the insurance agency B) finding a new car C) recuperating in ICU D) mourning a lost loved one E) answering to the judge why you knocked another family off the road

Don't be screwin' around. You'll just piss me off.

And then I'm going to laugh at you.

Carry-on

And unfortunately, even up here in bunny country, we have retards who'll get into wrecks on the road with exactly that thought fixated in their wee li'l heads.

Well, the Bunnymeister certainly has it all correct, except for the part about Awful House coffee.

Best thing you can say about that stuff is that it's hot -- maybe.

But wrapping your hands around one of those, no matter how bad it is, is better than wrapping yourself around a telephone pole.

I grew up in Washington state.  When we got snow, it was ice on the roads in minutes.  You know which vehicles were always the ones being towed out of the ditches?  The Jeeps, the Blazers, the Broncos and all the other cute little 4x4s that are great off-road, but can't stop any better than a ball bearing when the roads are icy.

In each of the last 2 years I yanked a full size pickemup outta the ditch with my Honda Ridgeline AWD. Those drivers didn't believe that I could do that, but SURPRISE! It also goes right through 2' drifts with no problems.

But for the most part, I just stick around home when the snow is like that, plowing driveways and making some pocket change with my John Deere.

No bad weather is forecast this year, though. Heck, we haven't received ANY snow yet, save for a dusting.

There was an enormous accident here a couple weeks ago.  The main road exiting I-65 had iced over because of the sub-freezing temperatures and thick fog.  Two people died and there were more than 50 cars smashed up.

There was supposed to have been a 30-car pileup during the latest storm out west somewhere.

There was a 3-car crash earlier this week in Glenview, IL (I think) that ended up with a 4WD SUV upside down on TOP of one of the other cars. The 3rd vehicle - a smaller sporty car - was almost cut in half. I'd like to know how the hell that happened.

Unitized body construction; frame basically supports front and rear of vehicle only, not connected in the middle. It's lighter and actually safer than a full frame as the car breaks apart rather than transfering energy from crash into passengers.

We had almost the same conditions of which you speak, SSB.

Leaving for work (training) this morning at 5:45, snowing at the house, but as I headed south and down the hills, the snow turned into sleet and ice.

By the time I hit the Spaulding/I-95 interchange, I knew it was gonna be BAD.  Nevermind the fact that nobody was going more than 45 on the roads (most people in NH do 70 on the Spaulding except in the worst snowstorms) but as soon as I made that right-hand curve leading to I-95, doing 40 mph, not touching the gas or brake and I felt that sssssllllllloooooowwwww fishtail to the right, I knew we was gonna have a "special" kind of morning.

I-95 was ICE.  Not patches here and there, or the occasional black ice, or ice under snow, not wet, ICE.  Worse road conditions than the ice storm three years ago.  There's a slight rise coming from the interchange south towards the Pease exit (Exit 3).  I've never seen so many cars/trucks/semis along the shoulders, wrecking into each other, or on the ditches/median.

By this time I'm doing 15 mph, TOPS.  Took me 45 minutes to get the 6 miles from Exit 4 to Exit 2 (Hampton tolls.)  NOBODY was going more than 20 mph.  I do the transition from I-95 to Rt. 101 eastbound.  The transition from 101E to Hampton tolls is in the opposite lane.  Jacknifed tanker truck on the transition.  Traffic backed up on 101E as far as the eye can see.

And yeah, the only thing that 4WD does for you in those conditions is ensure ALL your tires are spinning.  Scoobie said that when the snow switched to sleet on our road, it too became impassable.  No school bus for the Bug this morning.

Zeit can back me up on this one as I wasn't living here then, but the long-time residents say the last time I-95 in NH was closed was the Blizzard of '78.

It's almost 40 degrees now, and the salt/sand trucks have made their run, so it's all good.

Now we just have to worry about the snow coming in tonight.

Too many idiots think that 4WD in their SUVs makes them invulnerable to road conditions.  All it does is to make you accelerate faster.  That puts you further into the snowbank.

Also don't be an idiot all season tyres are not all season. Get winter tyres and have them studded if the state/province allows it. In Nova Scotia we can put whatever the hell we want on our cars. I had chains for an old car once and I may get a set for this car as they come in very useful on the roads here.

Uh, doesn't that mess up your roads?

I can understand this in mountainous terrain, but as far as I know, Nova Scotia has no significant mountainry.

Here in Nebraska, both chains and studded tires can be used only under the most unusual of circumstances, maybe about two or three times every century.

Chains can, but chains and studs don't screw up the road as much as frost heaves.

As for NH, we can use studded tires year round, although I can't imagine anyone stupid enough to do so.

When you find yourself on ice, don't  :censored: tailgate!!!!   :argh:  I can't count the number of times I've seen idiots around here in their pickups and SUVs, everyone doing 20 mph and tailgating in a long line of 20 or 30 vehicles.  All it takes is for one guy to get traction and have to stop and they'd have a huge pile-up.  I usually get out of the mess in my little, front-wheel drive Toyota, and drive in the lane Oklahoma doesn't plow.  If I just can't, I'll tick off the idiot behind me by leaving lots and lots of space in front of me.  That way, if I get hit, at least I don't get slammed between 2 big vehicles.

Don't jerk your vehicle when you are turning, changing lanes, etc.

Don't hit your brakes, try to coast to stop.

Don't accelerate, speed up very gently.

People in Nebraska travel on ice a lot, and most know the basic rules.  The further south we go, the worse the drivers get - even in good weather!!
