taking off for Christmas thread
« on: December 20, 2011, 03:50:43 PM »
Okay, the obligatory "taking off for Christmas" thread, which has been done every year since many of us were over at our old home.  It's a chance for members to advise--if they so wish--that one's leaving for the holiday, what plans and hopes one has, &c., &c., &c.

Me, I'll go with the femme to some Christmas Eve service at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday in the big city, after which she takes off for Omaha to see her sister and her sister's family.

Then I'll go to Midnight Mass in town, as usual sitting clear in the back dark corner so people won't notice I'm there, and want to chitchat with me.

The neighbor invited me over for dinner Christmas day, but I passed, as I'm dealing with some "issues" right now, and wouldn't be good company.  I'm sure the neighbor's wife will bring the leftovers here some time the same day.

The senior business partner is coming here from the center of the Sandhills, sometime in the afternoon Christmas day, and we'll probably dine on those leftovers while he tells me what's up.

Snow is forecast for here, the roof of Nebraska, on Thursday, December 22, and it looks likely.  But the rest of the time it's expected to be clear skies, moderately cool temperatures.

And of course there's the Top DUmmies of 2011 to write.

We're just sticking tight around the homestead this year, I may perhaps get out a morning or two for the last of muzzle-loader deer season, other than that, no big plans.  All the various work and social parties of the season for myself and Mrs. DAT concluded this past weekend, and though enjoyable, I am glad they're over and done.

That's usually the case; there's just too much.

And so one finally decides something quiet and simple is what one needs.

A very Merry Christmas! and God's Grace to one of my favorite people here.

For the first time in my married life (going on 18 years now), my Mom is coming to visit for Christmas. Fingers crossed that this goes well...

Uh oh.

I hope that's not as ominous as it sounds.

Back when I was younger, and the older brothers and sisters (and their spouses) were still around, I was always invited to one of their places for Christmas, but fortunately I usually found an excuse (we weren't close, because there was a large age-difference between all of them and myself).

I'm honestly not sure. The last "family" Christmas was when we went home, when our now 18 year old was 18 months old. It was not fun...running between my parents, my grandparents, his parents, his grandparents, etc. And, of course, since both our parents are divorced, it was all seperate houses. Very stressful!

Hoping that things will be relatively stress-free and calm with just Mom coming. But I am already going crazy with cleaning my house.

We are headed out very early in the morning to see family in TN. I will be taking my laptop and I have my iPhone to watch you people. :-)

I want to wish each and every one of you a Very Merry Christmas! Looking forward to all of the fun we'll have here in 2012!
I can see November 2 from my house!!!

I have absolutely no clue what I'll be doing that weekend.  I'll probably be here most of the time unless my brother wants to go do something when he's not working.

I'm working early that morning then driving a Jeep road with my daughters out to friends' camp.  It will be a fun day.  They had us pick a trampoline up for their kids and we're going to try to put it together.  We're bringing a gingerbread house kit for the kids to do so they'll be entertained while we do that.

Going on a cruise to the Caribbean. First one of those for both me and Mrs E. Will give a full report when we get back, assuming we survive the experience.....

It turns out Mrs E suffers from motion sickness. She's stocked up on Dramamine and some other type of prescription patch, so we'll see if that's effective...

I'm heading to Dallas Thursday night. I'll spend Christmas there with immediate family, and then we'll all go to Arkansas to visit my grandmother. Various aunts, uncles, and cousins will be there as well.  We'll spend a couple of days there, drive back to Dallas on NY eve, and then I'll fly back to Chicago on NY day.

Merry Christmas to everyone!

Eupher - I can't wait to hear all about it! We took one last Christmas and I think you and I talked briefly about cruises. Enjoy Bon Voyage!

I hope they're cruising someplace where there's snow.

Otherwise, it wouldn't seem like Christmas.

First year in 12 my Mom is living back in town.  Doing the double family boogie, and my brother put an interesting wrench in the works.  We are taking our family to Medieval Times for Christmas dinner.  It is a surprise.  Mom doesn't know.  One way or another, there will be a story.  Of that I am sure.

Christmas is going to be a Groundhogs Day style redux of Thanksgiving. Girlfriend and I are going out to my mom's place on Christmas eve, and we're going to eat, drink, play with the dogs and generally be merry.

My husband's son has to work, and can't get back to town until January, so we're delaying the Christmas dinner until then; at which time we'll put on a prime rib spread.

This is our plan for Christmas then:  Open presents just us in the morning, have his daughter & her baby/toddler over later for theirs, and then go on a visiting rampage to all The Sisters, and glom food off of them as we go, and call it Christmas dinner.   :-)

We'll be doing gifts in the morning at our place, then heading to go to see my wife's parents.  The Heiress will have a full slate of fun stuff at both places.  Monday, since both my wife and I are off, we'll be going up to my parents' place, where The Heiress will have another bunch of fun stuff waiting for her.  Mass is the 9 PM on Christmas Eve, which my church's Traditional Choir will be singing at.  There's three tenors, including me, that will be in the choir.  We're down a few people total for the holiday.

Still up in the air re: how many will be here. Could be 3 others, or maybe 6. But we are going NOWHERE! (For a change.)  :-)

I'll have a nice fire going in the fireplace all weekend, and on Christmas Eve my wife is making a beef tenderloin and I'm putting some salmon on the smoker.

I'll also watch the Bears get their butts kicked on Sunday.  :lmao:

Work is cutting us loose at 11 am.  From there I go home, light a fire, sit around the house with the Scoobster, and drag up a metric buttload of presents tomorrow night for the kidlets.

Made them all watch Miracle on 34th Street last night.  NONE of them had ever seen it.

Staying in town this season. I generally have the kiddos, but their dad will be about every single day to spend time with the children this year. He's taking them to zoolights tonight in fact and I'm going to finish wrapping the gifts while they are gone. We are pretty flexible on how we do things so we are just going with the flow. I'm not someone who has to have control over every little thing my kids do where my ex is concerned so he'll have the babies quite a bit during the holiday season, as will I. Best thing for them and I'm glad we have reached a point now where we can have this sort of arrangement. Merry Christmas everyone.
