Why no computer in the world should ever be turned off or left to sit idle EVER!!!
Attention everyone, instead of turning your computer off or letting it sit idle, please donate your unused computer time to accelerate the rate scientific/ technological innovation by participating in World Community Grid by IBM at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org It will not affect your computers performance and you will not get a virus!! This is simply the easiest way to make a positive contribution to society!! If you are interested in promoting World Community Grid, please email me at franco.lettieri@yahoo.com I have great publicity fliers that I can send you to print out, cut up and pass out to everyone. Please help cure cancer, HIV/AIDS, muscular dystrophy, etc...and let your computer participate in WCG, or some other scientific application such as protein folding....etc.....

Now, it could be harmless enough, but just to be safe, I clicked no links. Like I've said before, I'm no computer expert, and I'd prefer mine running as is for a while to come.

It's called 'Distributed computing' or a variation thereof, it's been in use for quite a long time to assist the processing of signals from deep space for SETI by a lot of scientifically-oriented folks who want to help search for any possible alien signals, since SETI's government funding has always been pretty minimal.  This particular venture seems to be some NGO that may or may not be legit.  I wouldn't touch it, myself.

Thanks for the explanation. Never heard of such before, but I thought it would be unwise to just go clicking links all over the place that come from DUmmieLand.

"Folding" has been around for a few years.  You install the client software the organization provides on your computer and it allows them to distribute data to your system.  It gives them far more resources for modeling, calculations, and rendering on a larger scale than they would otherwise have with their own equipment.   Medical research (particularly cancer) is a popular application if you're not into looking for little green men.

It's not a big deal unless you're worried about your electric bill since your computer runs at 100% the entire time.

You can also make a lot of money by helping Nigerian princes secretly transfer money into the United States.

You may have to pay a small processing fee, but there are millions at stake.

I did the SETI one for kicks and giggles when I got my first computer. It burned my old CRT screen.

NAMBLA is a left-wing organization.

There's a reason why patriotism is considered a conservative value. Watch a Tea Party rally and you'll see people proudly raising the American flag and showing pride in U.S. heroes such as Thomas Jefferson. Watch an OWS rally and you'll see people burning the American flag while showing pride in communist heroes such as Che Guevera. --Bob, from some news site
