Rangel renews call for military draft
By Pete Kasperowicz - 12/07/11 11:09 AM ET

Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) on Wednesday morning renewed his call for a mandatory military draft to ensure that the demands of the U.S. armed forces are not met only by lower-income Americans who are more likely to join the military to earn a paycheck.

Rangel spoke on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor bombing, and after Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) lauded the actions of U.S. troops in Afghanistan who are working to protect Afghans from terrorist elements within that country. Rangel said he was moved by Kinzinger's remarks, but said the burden that the U.S. military bears must be borne by all.

"If America is going to take this position, all Americans should be prepared to make the sacrifices as the gentleman before me has," Rangel said after Kinzinger spoke. "It's abundantly clear that everybody does not assume the same sacrifices, whether we're talking about taxes or loss of life.

Rangle is an racist idiot, but I actually have no problem with this proposal.

So they are going to be forced to take a job with the military right?  Yeh, like they are forced to steal and kill.  :panic:

This, like the last time he trumpeted this bullshit, is nothing more than a publicity stunt.

Charlie is sucking pretty badly in the overall scheme of things, due largely to his having been censured by his very own racist buddies, so all this bullshit is is a way in which he gets his name back in the lame stream media.

There is an election less than an year from now, you know.

Oh, and for the record, a return to the draft is simply not an option. Not now, and most likely, not ever. The only thing that would predicate a return to the draft would be a full-scale assault by some pissant country like Iran or North Korea or even China. And the Chinese are too busy making money to reach out across the pond and raise hell with us.

I do.  All it would serve to do is drive down the quality of the military.

It's a particularly stupid idea right now, with all of the services under the gun to drastically shed manpower in the next couple of FYs.

Awhile back, there was as pretty eye-opening study on the cost of instituting a mandatory two years of military service.  If I recall, without massive changes to military benefits, we'd go bankrupt, er.. or.. more bankrupt?

Any talk of it now, especially with a reduction in our military looming, is just political hog wash and cries for attention.
