Tennessee Fire Department Watches House Burn, Again

This is what happens in a society that cannot distinguish democracy from capitalism.
--------------------------------------------

The South Fulton Fire Department made national news last year after they refused to put out a house fire due to an unpaid fire subscription fee, and it appears that policy has not changed.
Homeowner Vicky Bell watched her home burn to the ground on Monday while firefighters stood behind her looking on, according to WPSD-TV.
While the city provides fire service free of charge to its residents, it requires an annual $75 fee for homeowners who live in unincorporated areas of Obion County -- which doesn't have its own fire department.
"In an emergency, the first thing you think of, 'Call 911,' " Bell said. "911 said they were in fact dispatched and they showed that they were on the scene. You could look out my mom's trailer and see the trucks sitting at a distance."
The city's mayor told the news station that the fire department can't survive without the fees and if they make exceptions to the rule, homeowners would not pay the fee.
"There's no way to go to every fire and keep up the manpower, the equipment, and just the funding for the fire department," Mayor David Crocker said, adding that after last year's fire, everyone should be aware of the city's policy.
Bell admitted that she was aware of the fee, but never thought it would happen to them.

2. I have virtually no sympathy for people like this

You can find this kind of thinker at sites like FR and that subterranean place. They want no taxes. This is what you get with no taxes: no fire department.

Want no taxes?  I have yet to see a single poster here advocate for no taxes.  I seen us discuss taxes being used in a wasteful way and for things not Constitutionally sound, but never no taxes.

You lie!

But we expect that from you, husb2.

And 40,929 posts?  Get a life, loser.

They pull the same stunt with us wanting smaller government, and claim that we want no government at all, they simply can not grasp the concept of a small limited government.

And we certainly don't want our government made up of people stupid and envious enough to be liberals.

Has no one there thought of forming a volunteer fire department?

Exactly.  We don't think people should do without.  We just don't believe that someone should pay your ****ing freight when you're perfectly capable of doing so yourself.

And $75/year for fire protection?  Seriously, you want my property tax bill?

Next thing you know, Bonerbo will be bitching because people that pay for health insurance get free medical care. :banghead:

Quick edit because I went and checked the fire again.
Interesting.

All people should be covered in case of fire. The politicians of this area should get their act together and make sure that this doesn't happen again.

30. "...Bell admitted that she was aware of the fee, but never thought it would happen to them..."

Actions, and often inactions, have consequences.

Did the community learn nothing from the similiar incident in 2010? Did they not have access to newspapers, teevee, or word of mouth information?

Did they not consider $75 a reasonable amount to pay to protect some or all of their stuff? Maybe not.

What's the difference between paying an annual fee for fire protection, and paying for auto insurance, or homeowners insurance?

I'm curious if the Home Insurance Company is aware of the fee policy and whether or not the homeowner will get a payoff. I mean, Insurance wants to know the compisition of building material (wood, brick, brick on how many sides) and the distance from the nearest fire hydrant. Seems reasonable that they would also want to know if the fee is paid to put out a fire.

DUmmies, remember, this is for an unincorporated area.  They are technically not part of the city that pays the taxes for fire protection, and the city cannot raise their taxes.  The fire department decided that since these people weren't paying taxes to help support the fire station, they would be charged a separate fee.  We are looking at about $6.25 a month for assistance in the case of fire, far less than any other insurance I can think of.

If the people in the unincorporated area don't want to pay the fee, they should try organizing a volunteer fire department and covering all the costs related to that.

Pesky details, CR!

We have a municipal fire dept, who also solicits private donations (CT was like that, too).  We always pay a donation just to stay on the right side of the angels.

RAISE TAXES, RAISE TAXES!!!  That's the only solution they ever spout over there.  No wonder the gimmecrat brand is tarnished and damaged.
