Oh my.

I wouldn't bother; I'd have it ripped out and install a safe electric stove.

Best way to clean wall oven and gas counter top stove?

My daughter and her SO have just bought a great house. The place is spotless except for the oven and stove-top. Since I have had a self cleaning oven for years, I don't know what to use that might do the job better than the old Easy-Off.

The oven is not too bad but the stove-top is really in need of help. Burned on grunge.

They will eventually replace these 2 old units(1960's coppertone)but for now, I get clean up duty.

I can take the iron burner grates home and soak in ammonia but the surface of the unit itself is the biggest chore.

Any ideas would be a great help.

1. Well, if they wouldn't mind investing about $80 into a steam cleaner I'd suggest one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/Shark-Premium-SC630D-Portable-Poc...

I've had one of these for about a year now, and it's simply amazing how well it cleans all kinds of things. It comes with a variety of brush tips that are perfect for stuck on grunge in small spaces, like I imagine would be on this stove and oven. I would buy another one of these in a minute if this one were to die on me.

The combination of hot, pressured steam and brushes works miracles.

2. My recent experience:

I am now living in an aptm. with an old stove. I, too, have had self-cleaning ovens for years, but this oven's self-cleaning feature doesn't work. So, after an apple pie boiled over in it, I was wondering what to use. I bought Easy-Off and was pleasantly surprised that it worked better than the old Easy-Off, and without the awful ammonia stench.

Pour gasoline all over the stove top... and I mean a lot of gasoline dummy, and light the burner.

Problem solved.

Yep, end of the dirty stove problem.

Douse the pilot light, then turn the oven gas on high. Now here's the tricky part: You need to inspect the inside of the oven closely, so get your head way in there. Look over every nook and crevice carefully. Take your time, this could take a few minutes...

and if it's too dark to see, use a match or a lighter.

Around these parts, natural gas stoves ALWAYS explode, and the explosion is ALWAYS
followed by the soft patter of little DUmmychunks falling back to earth.

You know, some months ago someone "gifted" me a brand-new portable electric oven; it'd been a gift to her but she didn't want it, and so gave it to me.

I'm of course pleased with it, but I can use it only as an oven (it's a pretty big one too).

When I have to boil water and stuff, I still have to use the natural gas stove, but I always open all the windows and doors, and toss all the cats outside, first.  That way, if I go, the cats don't have to go too.

I'm sure that sometime between now and Christmas, there'll be a natural-gas stove explosion story involving primitives.

As there is about this time of the year, every year.

I am inclined to agree Denninmi. Those stram clearers kick ass. If some thing can not come come clean with one of those then replace it or move.

I bought an Oreck steam cleaner about 4 years ago and darn the things one can do with them.  This is the big sucker with attachments and unfortunately for me a bit heavy for me to use for all things.

However, these are fantastic when a pipe freezes in the winter, cleans oven, stove top counters and kitchen floor without any kind of chemicals.    Can be used on carpets, mattresses, and outside to remove mildue from siding without having to pressure wash them.

Bodoah, I have had to use this darn thing to steam clean wrinkled clothing and refresh insides of sneakers and work boots.

Great in bathroom, I turn off the water valve to the toilet, flush and pour in the steam, cleans better then any chemical I have yet to find.

I am a big fan of steam cleaners, so little work to clean everything but the cat, cats do not like these machines.

Now, I like my gas stove, but it's nice and modern, a year old or so, with up-to-date technology.  Paper Rose's monstrosity is from the 60's?  I wouldn't trust that, I'd be as suspicious as Frank.

BTW, what a shitty job to give your own mother.  The dirtiest job in the house, most likely.  She strikes me as a pushover.  "No way, kid", is what I'd say.

Good idea, but I'd like to recommend the miracle cleaner, RDX.  It'll blow you away!
