USS Independence, LCS 2...WOW! MUST SEE
I have no idea how GenDynamics is doing, but this first ship looks absolutley wicked! Its tri-maran hull combined with the capabilities and look of a warship makes it something out of this world!

USS Independence, LCS 2
My surface ship buddy Tim passed on these photos of the second class of littoral combat ship (LCS 2), named Independence, and built by General Dynamics/Bath iron Works in their Mobile, Alabama shipyards.

The other ships built thus far for the LCS program have been by Lockheed Martin and have had their fair share of problems, having had two of their follow-on LCS programs cancelled for cost overruns.

Just one lousy 57mm Gun system forward and little room for anything else.It looks like it was made to go damn fast and could either go underwater or lift off and fly.

Those 'bat wings' are for high speed turns so it will not roll over !
With those jetski pods it almost has the propulsion power of a full size ocean liner like the Queen Mary 2 !

The Queen Mary 2 Technical
Power plant and propulsion system

The Queen Mary 2's power plant comprises both four 16-cylinder Wärtsilä 16V46CR EnviroEngine marine diesel engines generating a combined 67,200 kW (90,100 hp) at 514 rpm, as well as two General Electric LM2500+ gas turbines which together provide a further 50,000 kW (67,000 hp). Such a combined arrangement, known as CODAG (Combined Diesel And Gas turbine), provides for economical cruising at low speed combined with an ability to sustain much higher speeds when required, and has been common in naval vessels for some time. While QM2 is the first passenger ship to feature CODAG propulsion, she is not the first large passenger vessel to be powered by gas turbines as is sometimes mistakenly reported. That honour falls to the Finnish ferry Finnjet of 1977.

Thrust is provided by four Rolls-Royce Mermaid podded propulsion units, each featuring one forward-facing low-vibration Kamewa propeller with separately bolted blades. (QM2 carries 8 spare blades on the foredeck, immediately forward of the bridge screen.) The forward pair are fixed, but the aft pair can rotate through 360°, obviating the need for a rudder. The QM2 is the first quadruple screw passenger ship completed since the SS France in 1961.

Several of the spare propeller blades mounted on the foredeckAs in most modern cruise ships, QM2's propulsion machinery is electrically decoupled from her propeller shafts and her propulsion arrangement can therefore be more accurately described as "CODAG-electric" (by analogy with turbo-electric and diesel-electric). The diesel engines and gas turbines drive electrical generators, which provide the power to drive four 21,500 kW (28,800 hp) Alstom electrical motors located inside the podded propulsors (and thus entirely outside the vessel's hull).

In a further break with tradition, QM2's gas turbines are not housed along with her diesels in the engine room deep in her hull, but instead reside in a thoroughly soundproofed enclosure directly underneath the funnel. This arrangement allowed the vessel's designers to supply the oxygen-hungry turbines with air intakes without having to run air ducts the entire height of the ship, which would have wasted valuable interior space.

LCS class ships
Keel Laid: June 2, 2005
Launched: September 23, 2006
Commissioned: September 2008

Builder: Marinette Marine, Marinette, WI.
Propulsion system: Combined two diesel power
plants supplying ships electricial power and two
Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbine engine
each generating 36 megawatts (36,000 KW)
or about(47,00hp)of electricial power driving
steerable,independant water jet propulsion
systems

Speed: 50+ knots "add about 20 kts"

Length, overall: 378 feet
Beam: 42 feet
Draft: 13 feet
Displacement: approx. 3000 tons
Speed: 50+ knots
Crew: 15 core crew members, 75 with detachments
Aviation: two MH-60R/S or one MH-60R/S and VTUAV's
Armament:
 - 1 MK 31 Mod 0 RAM Launcher
 - 1 MK 110 Mod 0 57mm Gun system
 - 3 MK 26 Mod 17 .50 Cal Machine guns

The Littoral Combat Ship is the first design of the U.S. Navy's next-generation surface combatants. Intended as a relatively small surface vessel for operations in the littoral region (close to shore), the LCS is smaller than the Navy's guided missile frigates, and has been compared to the corvette of international usage. However, the LCS adds the capabilities of a small assault transport with a flight deck and hangar large enough to base two SH-60 Seahawk helicopters, the capability to recover and launch small boats from a stern ramp, and enough cargo volume and payload to deliver a small assault force with armored vehicles to a roll-on/roll-off port facility. Although the LCS design offers air defense and surface-to-surface capabilities comparable to destroyers with 57 mm guns, torpedo and missile launchers, the concept emphasizes speed, flexible mission module space and a shallow draft.

That little 57 MM gun forward is awesome :

The 57mm Mk 110 accurately fires automatic salvos of the highly lethal 57mm 3P ammunition at a firing rate of 220 rounds per minute and a range of up to nine miles. The naval gun is lightweight and compact, with minimal deck penetration for easy install, and operates in remote or local control.

3P Ammunition :
The 6-mode programmable 57 mm 3P (prefragmented, programmable, proximity fuzed ammunition provides Bofors naval guns highest possible combat flexibility and new capabilities to deal with threats that previously were impossible to engage.

Programmable for optimized effect and tactical flexibility.
Air-burst capability. Immune to ECM. Powerful pre-fragmented shell.
Maintained fuze triggering distance even at long firing ranges. Qualified as Insensitive Munitions with PBX explosives and LOVA-propellant.
Each 3P fuze is automatically and individually programmed by a Proximity Fuze Programmer (PFP) which continuously receives data from the Fire Control Computer. Immediately before firing the fuze is programmed to the selected mode.

“The 57mm Mk 110 and its programmable ammunition will allow our sailors to counter surface, airborne and shore-based targets,” said Scott Thompson, director of the Mk 110 program for BAE Systems. “Our gun system meets the requirements set by the U.S. Coast Guard and will combat today’s emerging maritime threats.”

BAE Systems has also received contracts to deliver three Mk 110 gun systems to support the U.S. Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship program

I certainly hope that hull design isn't classified...

I'm not 100% certain but they have talked about ships like that in Pop Sci or Popular Mechanics for the past 3-5 years now.

Just look at it...............It's a lot like the Sea Shadow, but she was a catamaran hull. LCS-1 and LCS-2 are just the prototypes for the LCS and they still haven't decided.

Personally I'm liking the LCS-2

Here is a pic of LCS-1

That ship class will be the forerunner of a future class of high speed ships designed to run down the Chinese super quiet diesel subs in the litorials of the South China Sea and in the Chinese river estuaries !

The south China sea betweem Formosa and the Chinese mainland are two channels near the coast on both sides and a bunch of shallow channels in between and is a perfect place for the Chinese to hide their fast attack boats to sneak up on the ships and the carriers of seventh fleet !

Their slow and quiet Alpha like subs are a danger because they are so quiet at slow speeds that they are almost undetectable up until the time they attack .

A fast ship ,like the USS Independence, LCS 2... can paint the bottom as they patrol with the new low frequency sonar that the liberals hate so much and light em up on the bottom so the SN_688's to deal with them with Mk_48ADCAPS 's !The Chinese will be hot to steal the plans for those ships, count on it !

It's actually Low Frequency Sonar

 Frequently Asked Questions General
Q:   What is a Littoral Combat Ship (LCS)?
The Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) is the first of a new family of surface ships for the US Navy. The LCS is a fast, highly maneuverable, networked surface combat ship,

Q:   What is the mission of the LCS?
LCS is specifically designed to defeat “anti-access” threats in shallow, coastal water regions known as the littorals. Such threats include fast surface craft, quiet diesel submarines and mines.

Q:   What capabilities will the LCS have that its predecessors do not ?
The modular design of LCS makes this small, fast ship extremely versatile. LCS will be equipped with specialized mission packages. Consisting of unmanned vehicles and on and off board sensors, mission packages are designed for different tactical situations such as mine warfare, undersea warfare or surface warfare. LCS will be able to swap-out these mission packages, allowing the ship to reconfigure as needed. LCS will also perform a variety of other missions including high-speed transit, maritime interdiction operations, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) and anti-terrorism/ force protection missions. LCS will also support Special Operations Forces and homeland defense as required.
