Rock Fan Kills Himself After Concert Left Him with Tinnitus

A British rock music fan stabbed himself to death after a night out watching U.S. band Them Crooked Vultures left him with severe tinnitus, a coroner's investigation reported.

Robert McIndoe, 52, was unable to sleep for three months after seeing the band – made up of former band members from Led Zeppelin, Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age – at the Brixton Academy, south London.

His psychiatrist, Dr. Helen Stinson, said, "He accepted death as a side-effect of stopping the noise," the Daily Mirror reported Friday.

The inquest heard he tried to commit suicide by taking an overdose at his home in south London in the same month that he fatally stabbed himself.

McIndoe's wife Shirley said, "He just wanted not to be suffering."

Tinnitus is characterized by a constant ringing in the ears, with the noise coming from inside the body rather than an outside source.

I have had tinnitus since January of 2009. The worst time is going to sleep. That is why I have to take ambien because it is impossible to fall asleep with the sound.  I always have to have back ground noise on.  If I'm busy I don't hear it, unless someone brings it up like this post just did...

You're lucky. Mine is bad enough that I always hear it, at work or at home with the TV and surround sound on.  It's a sound almost like cicadas in the summer, mixed with crickets, along with the standard high pitched whining noise.

Yup. Twenty-four years of trumpets and drums in my ears, along with some really nasty Cummins diesel-powered buses (riding in the back where the engine is, of course) has given me my tinnitus.

But that doesn't stop me from sleeping, I have to admit. Pisses Mrs. E off -- I'm gone in about 30 seconds after the head hits the pillow.

I have a bit of it myself, being around tracks, cannon fire, etc. will do that.  My acuity isn't bad at all, but I do get the background sound you all describe.  Thankfully the loudness of it that I perceive is fairly low.

I've tried a couple of different ones, but now I just concentrate on the sound and can fall asleep while listening to it.  In a way it's kind of like trying to sleep while camping out in the summer.

I've had tinnitus since I was 8 years old.  Quiiiite a while ago.  I can always hear it.  I've wondered if it affects hearing of certain tones, but I've been tested a couple times for work and school and it's never shown up.  I can hear a whisper from pretty far away.  Really doesn't bother me a bit.

I don't have tinnitus, but I can't seem to fall asleep without the radio playing.  Problem is, I can't stand the guy that comes on before Coast to Coast.  He's so f**king boring.

Had mine for years. I can forget about it for weeks until I read a thread like this and I become acutely aware of it again.

of course its not as bad as having the tune of Achey Breaky Heart running through your head.
Yesterday I had the tune of the Lion King's "Be Prepared" running through my head all day.
