Who knew that some noises could eventually become as extinct as the passenger pigeon? Depending on your age, you or your kids or grandchildren may have only heard some of the following sounds in old movies, if at all.

12. The sound that a wall-mounted crank telephone made while cranking -- essentially a bell-like sound that rang up the operator. This is a pre-rotary phone.

13.  Less present today, but not entirely gone -- the sound a bottle cap makes after you open a bottle. Sort of a "chip".

13. The sound of a hand-pushed reel lawn mower.

14. The sound of someone else on the phone because it was a party line.

[whatever the hell number we're on +1] - The sound a carburetor makes when you take off the air cleaner -- a vacuum sound.

The sound of a cassette tape being eaten by your tape player. :-)

The sound of gears grinding as you're trying to shift into 1st gear in an unsynchronized car transmission while the car is moving (yeah, I know, it's a bit esoteric, but WORK WITH ME HERE, EH?????  :rotf:  )

I remember punching the buttons, and setting the station by tuning it in, and pulling the button out before pushing it back in.  No idea what a "shaker" is though.

I remember that the radio in my 1954 Mercury had a vibrator.

All car radios did in that era.......they were used to (sort of) create AC from the 6 V DC battery supply so that a transformer could work to increase the voltage in order for the tubes to function.  As they aged, they tended not to start, and I can remember many times, giving the dashboard a good rap to get one started.
