DDOT Drivers Refuse To Work: ‘They’re Scared For Their Lives’
November 4, 2011 8:30 AM

DETROIT (WWJ) - UPDATE – 2:30PM: Deal Ends Bus Driver Work Stoppage

People who catch the bus in Detroit may be waiting awhile Friday. About 100 Detroit Department of Transportation bus drivers are at work, but are refusing to drive their buses.

WWJ Newsradio 950′s Scott Ryan spoke with Henry Gaffney, spokesman for the D-DOT bus drivers union AFL-CIO Local 26, who said this was not an organized maneuver by the union.

Gaffney said it’s a matter of bus drivers fearing for their safety, citing an incident that happened Thursday afternoon.

“Our drivers are scared, they’re scared for their lives. This has been an ongoing situation about security. I think yesterday kind of just topped it off, when one of my drivers was beat up by some teenagers down in the middle of Rosa Parks and it took the police almost 30 minutes to get there, in downtown Detroit,” said Gaffney.

Speaking live on WWJ, Mayor Dave Bing spokesman Stephen Serkaian said they are working hard to resolve the matter and get drivers back on the road.

Ummmmmmmmm, think again........................

As far as I'm concerned they can stuff all that 'Detroit revival' horseshit, the only way I'd consider moving there would be if they irradiate the place first.

30 minutes for the cops to arrive at a call for help in downtown Detroit?
Seems to me the police were waiting for the attackers to disperse completely.

Proof to the lie: The police will protect you. Get a gun and learn to use it. Police today are more about revenue collection than protection of the people. I first realized that fact when the cops at the Columbine shooting waited for an HOUR after the shooting stopped before going in-victims who could have been saved, bled to death in that time.

Bottom line: You are on your own to protect yourself. Only a fool counts on the cops for their protection.

I hate to have to say things like this...

Mrs. E has a CCW, though she does not pack a weapon. Neither does she go jogging in the park.  :p

I was also born in Michigan---- that being said, 4 years in service and moving from state in 1985 helps cut the ties but; went back to Michigan last summer to visit friends and relatives.  On the way to the northern part of the state, by-pasted Detroit as usual by going up the center of the state.  Got back down to a northern suburb and a cousin took us to the new ballpark for the Tigers (never been there, always Tiger Stadium).  Nice ballpark- to bad it's in the middle of Detroit.  Got out of town ASAP --

the old stadium - childhood memories

and the new - above says it all
yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery - today is a gift- that's why it's called the "present"

Yep I read that. That's one sheriff out of many. Sheriffs tend to have a bit more commonsense that city appointed police chiefs who tend to parrot the anti-gun views of the liberals who appointed them. But up here in Iowa there are some sheriffs who would deny guns to everyone if they were given the chance.

The big point is that people are attacked unexpectedly and need time for the brain to work to sort out just what is going on.  Civilians seldom expect an attack, they are not trained to be paranoid as our Cops are, on guard every minute they are out of their homes.   Even Cops can be taken by surprise off duty, home invaders while taking a shower, sitting on the john, cooking supper or mowing the lawn.

It takes training, not just a once a time class but a whole lot more of what to watch for, a constent paranoid suspicion of all in countered. Practice both the skill but also take courses in how to determine a threat or if they should fire and hit the attacker and not a kid in a baby stroller.

Funny this came up as just yesterday Mom came over and I gave her a cane that was too short for me but fit her fine.    I had her sit and watch the Cane -Foo videos on self defence for the Senior Citizens.   Not only self defence but used to exercise the upper body.

After I told her this was a weapon one can take anywhere, into Courts, Hospitals, Schools, Malls, planes, trains and what not, she had just one objection to carrying one------.   A cane will make me look too old,  she was born in 1922 or so, but still drives. :Lao:

In an unexpected attack in a parking lot at the grocery store, Mom would not have time to defend herself with an arsenal of guns , knives or pepper spray in the bottom of a purse.   But the Cane is at hand and a good Oak one even swung wildly will surprise and cause damage to an attackers body.

Guns are fine for those that know when to use them and when to back down.   State laws are weird, shoot someone advancing on you with a knife at 50 paces and you could be in big trouble.      Don't forget the police that shot a man pulling out his ID and they thought he had a weapon.

We have guns for home protection, but I bet if we had a home invasion I would be no where the fire arm was, a cast iron fry pan will do the job nicely.

I have a sister who was always a big supporter of Detroit - while she lived in the suburbs and visited only very nice places in the city.  Fast forward to career changes (auto related), moving away for a while, and now looking for a new home back in Detroit.  She admitted last month that there are no decent areas of the city in which to live.  There may be a nice block or two together, but you have to go through areas we imagine to be like war zones to reach them.  I was very surprised to hear anything negative about Detroit from her.

I carry, but more often in case I fall of a horse in some draw and have to signal for someone to come carry my clumsy self out.

It's gotten to the point where they have to put cops in the schools to keep the students from going nuts (they call them "school resource officers" here).  Are they going to have to do that with the buses in Detroit?

Chalk up another mark against public transportation.

I remember it was big discussion back in the 60s when cops started being assigned to public schools.  It's been a hole for a long time.
