Abandoned property/homes
« on: October 23, 2011, 01:46:19 PM »
I was driving past a small piece of land with an old abandoned home on it today, as I do everyday and got thinking. I pulled in the "driveway" (what was left of it) and took a look around. The house was in relatively ok condition (needs a fair bit of work) and the property is quite grown up...basically it's never going to sell.

I know for a fact this property is owned by the province/municipality (I'm not sure who deals with this) and it's clear they have zero interest in it.

I'm curious what the process is like to buy something like this when the government owns it. I imagine you'd get quite a nice deal, unless you had to pay back taxes. (which I imagine you would)

Who would I go and ask about something like this? How would I get whatever process goes along with this going? I know nothing about this or if it's possible so any help would be very nice :)

I'd contact the local property tax assessor first.

Here's a place that I found interesting in a rural area near Charlevoix, Michigan.

Unfortunately..... The road is rutted and has soft sand coming up to it from one direction, but it's OK the other direction with modern homes on it. The view is fantastic. The structure is sound, but all the woodwork would have to be replaced.

My wife was not interested.  :???:

Wow, that looks like it would've made a good hideout for Dillinger or Capone.

Isn't Charlevoix, Michigan, where the Loeb family once had a summer "home" that was, really, more like a mansion?

The Loeb family of Chicago; of the famous Leopold-and-Loeb murder duo in, I think, 1923.

One got the impression, from history books, that it's kind of a resort area.

That is so cool looking!

You are correct. They had a "little cottage" of about 5000 square feet in Charlevoix. Other wealthy Chicago families also had such "cottages" there.

Charlevoix grows each year as a more touristy place. It was so when I was stationed there.

That is so cool looking!

It's on top of a hill about 60 feet from the "road," and it overlooks acres of what was once pastureland, and beyond that heavily wooded areas.

Hell if you were in Europe that would be a ruin and would go for 100K+.
“The national budget must be balanced. The public debt must be reduced; the arrogance of the authorities must be moderated and controlled. Payments to foreign governments must be reduced, if the nation doesn't want to go bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance.”
