Frank, any word yet from the SEC on accepting Mizzou's self inviting into said conference?
Nope, no word officially about Missouri joining the Southeastern Conference, but Missouri's acting pretty confident, and it being Missouri, it's probably pretty much a done deal now.
Missouri'll make a fine addition to that conference, although really, I would've liked things rather more if Missouri had come with Nebraska into the Big 10, so that we could have some company instead of having to deal with easterners all by ourselves.
Or will they and OSU start their own conference? They can call it the "Toothbrush Conference". Anywhere else it would be the Teethbrush Conference.
Oh now. This has been a while, but when I was in college, every year we "sponsored" students from Oklahoma State, Oklahoma's little brother; showed them around, partied them, gave them a good time.
Good kids, students from Oklahoma State, and no dental problems.
What struck me about them was that they
knew they were going to get beat by us, pummeled by us (this was during their 42-year losing streak against Nebraska), they
knew they were going to get pounded, they
knew there was no hope.....but they never held it against us, being mellow and laid back about the whole deal. Absolutely no acrimony in their beings, fans of Oklahoma State.
Missouri was always a different matter. Missouri, being much older and bigger and richer than Nebraska, always had this absurd notion they were "better" than us in all things cultural, intellectual, technological, traditional.
Well, that of course was true--in size and resources, Missouri was a fully-grown bison compared with the infant field mouse that was Nebraska--but we showed them, at least on the football field.
From that first meeting in 1890, Missouri got frustrated with us--a frustration lasting 120 years--because they were better than us, and so
supposed to pound us every time.....but that wasn't happening. Nebraska owns Missouri, in one of the widest win-loss chasms in the old Big 8 and Big 12.
However, Missouri was
never, at no time, a "sure win" for Nebraska. They'd lose and lose and lose and lose, when Nebraska was just an "average" or "so-so" team.....and then when Nebraska was exceptional, ooops, they'd beat Nebraska (Oklahoma had the same experience).
When playing Missouri, even if Missouri had a lousy, rotten team, one could never be sure, be confident, about what was going to happen. In terms of fingernail-biting, no other team in the Big 8 or Big 12 presented so much tension about the game, than Missouri.
Fans of Oklahoma State and Nebraska always seemed to well represent a cross-section of those states, the socio-economic strata, but fans of Missouri appeared to be
only of the upper crust of that state; the elites, the professionals, the wealthy.
Nothing against the upper crust, but we showed 'em.
