******COLLEGE FOOTBALL: WEEK 6******

Not many nights left on the old back deck as Fall settles into ol'Ioway. Just lovely, tonight, though. Watching baseball and digging these here Division Series. So, are we done with expansion? A lot of buzz about Missouri to the SEC. A move I can't understand. Maybe, a later thread. A tough week. Congrats to brendan, Redbear, Era (you missed a pick, bonehead, or you might have taken it) and happyiowan, for 9-6 records. brendan takes over the overall lead but everybody is within striking range. Even joey. One good week and it's anybody's. Some tough choices again, this week. Some great games, also. We have another Thursday night tilt so before kick. Standings to follow. Thanks, as always, for sticking with it.

Thursday, October 6

California +23.5 @ Oregon

Friday, October 7

Boise State -20.5 @ Fresno State

Saturday, October 8

Oklahoma -9 @ Texas (at the second rate Texas State Fair)
Arizona State -3 @ Utah
Miami(Fla) +7.5 @ Virginia Tech
Iowa +3.5 @ Penn State
Missouri -3 @ Kansas State
Air Force +16 @ Notre Dame
Florida +12 @ LSU
Auburn +10 @ ArKansas
Vanderbilt +29 @ Alabama
Georgia -1 @ Tennnessee
Texas A&M -6.5 @ Texas Tech
Michigan -3.5 @ Northwestern
Ohio State +10.5 @ Nebraska

Who has Ohio State down by ten-and-a-half?

Ohio State has a damned fine football team.

Could be; Ohio State as usual's underrated by the powerful hate-Ohio State lobby.

Someone might, or might not, be overrating Nebraska.

Given the primitives' track-record for predicting things, I'm getting nervous for Nebraska.

Okay.  That's it.  I'm getting a hold of my bookie.

If so many primitives think it's Nebraska, it's going to be Ohio State by 37 points, at least.

Okay.  That's it.  We're doomed.  Nebraska's going to be 4-2.

One's grateful however that the ridiculous truemud primitive didn't show up to demonstrate his ignorance about sports, and that El Stupido hasn't opened his halitosised big mouth.

I'd pick Nebraska to win straight up.  Wisconsin seems to be the exception in the Big 10 (+2) this year in that they seem to be the only team that has the potential to make a Nat'l Championship run, problem being the inexperience of their QB will likely catch up with them at some point.

But Nebraska at home, against an Ohio State that beat up one MAC team, slipped by another, lost to Miami (FL), beat up a hapless Colorado, and had one somewhat entertaining loss against Michigan State?  Yeah, I'll take Nebraska.

You're aware, sir, though, that as a Nebraskan who believes in clean sportsmanship, I--like all my fellow Nebraskans--have a policy of not disparaging opponents.

About the meanest, nastiest, dirtiest, foulest thing I can say about Ohio State is that they got a pretty good team.

Hard to win when you cannot score.

Buckeye fans are beginning to long for the days of Steve Bellisari or Jim Karsatos.

The Michigan State game was beyond belief.

Ohio State has a damned fine football team.

No, Ohio State HAD damned fine team, for other conference standards. Now? They got rid of Tressel, have all KINDS of player problems, suspensions, etc. I'm not sure I wouldn't take Nebraska with -10.5.

I'm still finding parallels with this game and the first Nebraska-Oklahoma game in 1912 (Nebraska won, 13-9).

Nebraska was having a down year, and Oklahoma, having only recently gotten into football, was having all sorts of, uh, problems with "irregularities" in their football.  Both teams had zero morale, zip.

Nobody paid attention to that game; it was between a couple of losers, after all.

Well, we all know the rest of the story.

And so I think big things, a bright future, is coming on Saturday, despite an inauspicious start.  Ohio State'll be back as conference champion by the mid-term elections of 2014, and Nebraska should be champion of the Big 10 for the first time around when the (R) president is re-elected in 2016.

As for my honest sentiments about Ohio State, nobody but God knows what those are; it's just the way Nebraskans are, never speaking ill of an opponent (there is an exception to every rule, though; check with me on November 12).  Bob Devaney, Tom Osborne, and Frank Solich wouldn't be caught dead disparaging an opponent, and Nebraskans followed their example.

It's one of those things that makes us distinctive.

I'm sure it's puzzling, but hey, I ain't sayin' nothin' bad about Ohio State.  No way.

Frank, you'll see 10 other Big-We Can't Count teams pulling for the newcomer, Nebraska, in that game. That's the difference between the SEC and all other conferences. OSU has dominated the Big-## for a while now and there is no cohesion among the fans. It's totally different in the SEC.

Oh, I dunno, Rebel.  All of the rest of them are effete elitist easterners in blue states, and we're the puny little cowboy from one of the reddest states in the union.  If I were one of them, from Michigan or Illinois or Minnesota or whatever, it seems to me I'd stick with one of my own, which would be.....Ohio State.

I can't see where anybody in the Big 10's going to cheer for Nebraska, except Nebraskans.

You're aware of the media bias against the Southeastern Conference (of course), and against the spinal column of America, the former Big 8 Conference.  The powers that be never cared for you, or me.

I'm not sure what their bitch was, and is, against teams from the South, but I do know the source of their bitch against Nebraska.  Nebraska's a tiny little state; it was the smallest state in the Big 8, and then the Big 12, and it's most definitely the smallest state in the Big 10.

Until Idaho (Boise State) joined the big boys a few years ago, Nebraska was the smallest state in the union with a major college football program.  Forty-one of the fifty states have more people than Nebraska.

We're pretty small.....but yet we whipped the big states left and right, here and there, all over the place.

To the media, favoring eastern states and the west coast, it always seemed against the natural order of things, that such a little guy was always trouncing all the big guys.  It bred resentment and hostility among the media elites, and among the easterners and west coasters.

I fully expect fans of the other ten teams in the Big 10 to be supportive of one of their own, Ohio State, which is several orders of magnitude more populous than Nebraska.  We're all by ourselves, like Finland against the Soviet Union.

...because I've read too many of their "anyone but OSU" comments. The other teams literally pull for anyone to beat OSU, doesn't matter if it's f'n Syracuse. BTW, they're not elitist Easterners, they're former rust-belt and auto-belt teams who've lost their luster due to market economics, unions, and governmental intervention. Yankees, yes, elitists? I don't see'em that way. As for the conference, well, you won't see a ton of Big-## teams going to the Rose Bowl from other schools to watch OSU. Fans of all teams in the SEC would go to watch LSU in the Sugar. We hate each other throughout the year, though we won't pull for a team out of conference to beat even our biggest rival, but we're all SEC in post-season. We're a family, 76 years in the making. There's a reason the SEC is the only conference with no buyout clause.
