RICHMOND, April 29 -- Gov. Timothy M. Kaine (D) said Tuesday that he would consider backing an increase in Virginia's 17.5 cent-a-gallon gasoline tax, despite the record price of fuel at the pump.

In an interview on WTOP (103.5 FM), Kaine said the increase may be needed to generate money to build and repair roads in the wake of the Virginia Supreme Court's ruling in February that threw out last year's transportation plan.

"All issues are on the table," Kaine said. "We are talking about a gas tax."

Kaine said he will call the General Assembly back into session in June to try to force a resolution of the state's transportation problems, including a projected shortfall of several hundred million dollars in the part of the budget that finances road maintenance.


Wish I could do that.  Spend more than I make and then force my employer to pay me more to make up for it.   :whatever: :banghead:

The court's decision that the NVTA was an unelected body constitutionally prevented from levying taxes wiped out millions of dollars in transportation projects, and has created an unprecedented mess in the General Assembly.

Legislators are already down to their final days to resolve a contentious budget in a very lean year, and must now try to salvage what they can from the NVTA's list of orphaned transportation investments.

“Friday was a very bad day for transportation in Virginia,” said Arlington County Supervisor and NVTA chairman Chris Zimmerman, citing huge cuts to VDOT that took effect the same day.

The NVTA had already approved funding to a long list of important transportation projects in Fairfax County, including the widening of Route 7 near Reston and improvements to the Fairfax County Parkway.

^they can't keep up with the population. Every project is screwed from day one. Of course you knew that :-)

A lot of the problems are due to the infighting over who is going to pay for the Dulles rail expansion. They want to run it all the way out to the airport and people in Tyson's are fighting about whether to put it underground or above ground. People in Reston are fighting about who is going to pay for their part, etc...in other words, typical govt cluster.

The tax would have gone even higher if state lawmakers and Governor Mike Easley had not agreed last year to cap the tax.

The gas tax is used for road improvements and transportation needs.

Add to that the standard federal gas tax of 18.4 and you have almost 50 cents per gallon going to taxes here in NC. 

I gassed up at $3.58 a gallon yesterday.  A little over 4 gallons was $15.00.

BTW:  Mike Easley is no friend of the average Joe and Josephine North Carolinian.
