I've lived overseas most of my life. During my Navy years, I saw poverty in the Philippines, India, Pakistan and even one time in Africa. What Americans call "poverty" would be middle class to upper middle class in most of the world.
I read recently you can have a car, a flat screen TV, a washer-dryer, microwave and all the in-between accessories and still be "poor" under the US rules.
Unbelievable...
Then in my childhood my family was third world poor, poverty stricken to the max.

But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.†- Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948
