I was just looking at one of those job..
boards--as you know my husband was laid off on the 20th--and there was a job posting for a job...the requirements--(must have) a Bachelor's Degree and three years experience. The pay: $12-$14 an hour--WTF?!?!?

Fifteen years ago someone with those creds made more than that. My son is in college he works a paid internship and makes $11.50/hr.

My husband made 14 an hour 15 years ago with no degree.

How is any one supposed to live with these wages? I don't mean have all the "extras" just necessities, rent/mortgage, food, health care, elect, etc. It's damned near impossible.

Republicans say:

Don't buy a car...how do you get to work? Far too many areas either don't have public transportation or what little they do have doesn't run for the hours you need.

You can feed a family of four for $100 a week.....Please someone point me where I can do that. I use coupons, shop more than one store and still can't get my bill down to $100. We don't eat expensive food. I make soups from scratch, I have a bread machine, I try to make at least two meals a week that will be enough for two nights dinner.

I won't even get into what my electric bills run me. And I do what I can do cut costs. Air only when it's really hot--and I keep it on 76 or so, my heat is on 67. My house isn't huge--average size--and my bill is no less than $300-$350 a month. I replaced my heat pump this year to a more efficient--

I don't know how you're supposed to support a family on $12 dollars an hour. To those of you that are able to do that...you have my complete admiration and you're my new heroes.

That is all. Just a rant I wanted to get out...

Maybe your husband has skills that aren't worth much. Sorry, lady. That's how it goes. If jobs paid what you wanted them to pay, would you care to guess how much higher those bills would be?

No, we don't say that.  I've never heard a Republican say that.

Then you're a @#%$ing idiot.  Peanut butter, bread, lunch meat, rice, beans, ground beef.  I think what this entitlement-minded whore means is "you can't eat like kings and queens on $100 per week".  This is true, but irrelevant.

Sorry, I have uncontrollable outbursts in response to stupidity.   :hyper:  I mean, I read posts like this - about sheer confusion and idiocy in response to a loss of income and not knowing what to do to adapt, and it almost makes me think Darwin was on to something.

Try keeing it on 80 for cooling and 62 for heat and adjusting what you wear.  The Queen likes our house cold, and runs around in long-legged pajamas and a bath robe to stay warm.  It's bizarre.  Must be a female thing.  But we can afford to do this.  If all of the sudden I was making $12 an hour, she'd adjust.  So should you.

Their ability to form a strategy, plan ahead for it, and choose a path to progress toward a goal makes the common grasshopper look like the Antichrist by comparison.

It's always been easier to get a better job if you already have a job.  Instead this dumbshit is looking for a listing that says "$30 an hour, full benefits, six months in position necessary to vest full defined-benefit retirement of 85% of base."  There is no such job, cupcake.

$12-$14 is extremely common in my neck of the woods, and is considered a good job.  Generally, both husband and wife work.  Two jobs like that, get you up to $56K.  Ya both got to roll out of the sack in decent shape to show up and get the job done, though.  No sitting around watching idiot daytime TV.

Cavegirls, raise your hand if you could easily feed a family of 4 for $100, or 2 for $50 per week.  This is normal for me.

Ummmmm, DUmshite, my family of 3 gets by on $200 a MONTH. At that "level" we still eat fillet, have wine with dinner, etc.

Learn where to shop, it does not have to be all Trader Joes, or whatever "high end" store (ours is Raleys, the prices will make your eyes bleed)  you've been going to.

Hell, at Grocery Outlet I can get 12 packs of beer for $2.99. It's actually not bad, as long as it's cold.

College degrees in womyns studies, black studies, latino studies are not worth the paper they are written on. I would rather hire someone that has 4-5 years of work experience than someone that with a BA degree.

Average hourly wage where I live is $10/hr.  When offered a job at $13, I thought that was pretty damn good, and that is with a degree and 4 years experience. As Karin said, we both work.

Sure.  Come to my house and see how we do it.  We are a family of three, but we still spend less than $100 a week for food.

The Big Blue Cities here in Massachusetts usually offer $9 to $10 an hour for unskilled or $12 to $13 for skilled starting pay. If the BIg Blue Cities don't pay the so-called 'living wage' that you DUmpers expect, so why would anyone else ?

Like everything, the wage you earn is based on supply and demand - If you are a doctor in a highly specialized field, you get paid well. If you are some common 'Guido with a drill', you get paid less.

It sounds to me like your husband falls into the Guido with a drill category. Sadly, his wages are just going to get lower, as the Obama administration supports allowing illegal Guidos with drills entering the US, depressing the value of your Guido. Understand ?

We spend from $300 to $400 a month on food, but we bring home probably about $600 worth of food with all the buy one get one free specials that Publix runs.

Beans and rice are cheap, chili is cheap, spaghetti is cheap, jambalaya is cheap, beef and potato or chicken and potato stew is cheap, gumbo is cheap.  Buy whole chickens, learn to cut them up or have them cut. Bake it whole with a side of potatoes and corn.  Frozen corn on the cob is cheap.  Meatloaf is cheap.

That's 9 cheap easy meals right there, pretty much dirt cheap.  Cake mix is a dollar, frosting @$1.29.  You're not starting out with nothing, you must have staples, bake some cookies.  Oatmeal and peanut butter cookies are very cheap to make.  Plus you can make a grip of cookies in under an hour.

It's not hard.  You have to want to do it.

I'm all out of strong...

Today my husband lost his job--downsizing. He'd been working for the company for over two years. He was out of work for a 1 1/2 before he found that job. It wiped us out, trying to stay a float during that time.

We have very little saved, because the job payed a lot less than he was making. We were barely making ends meet.

They worked the shit out of him...he worked every bit of 70 hours a week. A year ago October he had a heart attack. The heart attack happened on a Wednesday, he was back to work Monday.

I'm scared we're going to lose everything. I can't do this again. He heard me crying and said just be strong..it will be ok.

I don't have any strong left. I can't stop crying. There aren't any jobs out there. What are people like us supposed to do? He not only lost the job, but the health insurance too. He has a heart condition, meds he has to take.

I don't have anymore strong...

35. Thank you to everyone...

for the kind words and the helpful links and advice. I can't tell you how much it means to have a community to go to when things are good as well as bad.

To all that are going through the same...and I know it's many based on this thread alone...I will keep all of you in my thoughts and wish you the best of luck out there.

I'm so sad for my country, to see what it's become. Where people are treated with such indifference and disrespect. Where someone's worth is based on how much they can do for you...and when you've used them up you throw them away. This isn't how it's supposed to be.

How are we supposed to pull ourselves up by the bootstraps, when they make sure the boots have to straps.

I'm beyond being disgusted, and feeling beaten down. No matter I will find the strength and be there for my husband. Watching him cry and hearing him say he failed, is killing me. We'll get through this together..what other choice do we have.

Again, thank you to all who took the time to post encouragement, look up sites to help me. I'm kinda shell shocked right now and it's really appreciated.

Who are "they" ?  Republicans ?  I hate to tell you this but if you don't pick yourself up, no one else will.  It's called life.

You can do it if you shop at Aldi's. I just go to the regular grocery store for things like greek yogurt and sale items that I have coupons for, and the rest of my shopping is done at Aldi's.

ETA: I do BJ's for certain things because I can get it in bulk, and I do it for rolls that last the month, I also do Walmart for certain things that I know are cheaper there and things that Aldi's doesn't sell.

ETA Again: I do BJ's the store for certain things LOL, not the other thing for certain things, that would be like prostitution.

Use the internet at the public library, turn your service off.  Cut the cable and read and borrow movies from the library.  Don't use AC.  I never have and don't like to be in it (and WY gets in the 90s and low 100s in the summer).

If you don't like the meal suggestions mentioned here, contact your area Extension Office.  They have a whole government program (I know you like that term) that provides menus and menu planning that are incredibly inexpensive.

Take a full-time job and at least one part-time job.  House cleaning pays well and you don't have to have a fancy wardrobe.  The houses are usually air-conditioned so you won't even sweat much.

Good grief.
