Senate OKs stopgap bill to prevent shutdown
Administration found enough FEMA funds

By Stephen Dinan and Sean Lengell
Washington Times

The Senate passed a stopgap spending bill Monday night to avert a potential government shutdown after the Obama administration discovered it had enough money in its disaster accounts to last through the end of this month, leaving lawmakers with “nothing to fight about.”

^snip^

Instead, the Senate passed two “clean” short-term spending bills - one which lasts through Oct. 4, and the other through Nov. 18. The House, whose members are on vacation, is expected to pass the Oct. 4 measure by voice vote later this week and then vote on the longer-term bill when the full House returns next week.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Kentucky Republican, said Monday’s action was “vindication of what Republicans have been saying all along: before we spend the taxpayers’ money, we should have a real accounting of what’s actually needed.”[/quote]

Herman Cain splits with House GOP, says find FEMA offsets later

By Stephanie Condon

House Republicans are insisting that emergency relief funding to aid natural disaster victims should be offset by cuts elsewhere in government spending, but Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said Monday that Congress should just pass the funding and find a way to pay for it later.

"There's plenty of money in Washington, D.C. to offset anything that we need to spend on FEMA," Cain said on CNN Monday. "I would make sure that FEMA got the money that it needed, and if I have to go find the offsets later, find it later."

It's fixing to be a big ass campaign issue, cause I don't see it happening anytime soon.

Ah-yup. The Repubs in the House can't seem to get their heads out of their asses long enough to understand that THEY are accountable now.

Passing a balanced budget is required by the Constitution, is it not? The DC dumbo critters haven't passed one in over 40 years, the 'Pubs in over 50 years.

No Democrat-Controlled Congress Has Balanced Federal Budget in 40 Years; No Republican President Has Balanced Federal Budget in 50 Years

No Congress in which the Democrats controlled both the House and Senate has balanced the federal budget since fiscal 1969--more than 40 years ago.

By Terence P. Jeffrey
March 15, 2010

(CNSNews.com) - Many leading Democrats in Washington these days like to point to the fact that the federal budget was balanced for part of the time that President Bill Clinton was in office. What they do not mention is that those balanced budgets occurred only when Republicans controlled both houses of Congress.

In fact, according to the historical data published by the Office of Management and Budget in the Obama White House, no Congress in which the Democrats controlled both the House and Senate has balanced the federal budget since fiscal 1969--more than 40 years ago.

A poor showing for both parties

No; it isn't.  That's why it was such a big deal in the Cut/Cap/Balance proposal that died over the Summer.

Euph,

House republicans have passed a bunch of solid, budget-style bills such as Cut, Cap and Balance. They need to get out there and say what they've been doing, perhaps, but the've definitely been doing the peoples' business. Reid refuses to hold an up-or down vote on these, so they are DOA in the Senate.

God alone suffices.

True dat. Thanks for reminding me.  :cheersmate:

CCB is but a start, though. And you're right about Boehner getting out there and banging on tabletops instead of letting loose the waterworks.

He should be holding a weekly press conference to report back to the American people what has happened vis a vis the budget for that week and be relentless about it.

Dingy Harry should have NO PLACE to hide.

We need more Canter and less Beohner. I'd like to see Canter get Speaker Of The House.
