Last meals on death row
I'm struck by the fact the Troy Davis wanted no last meal. I don't know why I find this interesting. I just do.

LAWRENCE BREWER (2011): chicken fried steaks, a triple bacon cheeseburger, a bowl of fried okra, a cheese omelette, barbeque, fajitas, pizza and peanut butter fudge with crushed peanuts.

GARY GILMORE (1977): Hamburgers, eggs, potatoes, coffee and whisky

HENRY PORTER (1985): Tortillas, steak, beans, tossed salad, jalapeno peppers, ice cream and chocolate cake

TED BUNDY (1989): Steak, eggs, toast, milk, coffee, juice, butter, jelly and hash browns

JAMES SMITH (1990): Yogurt (after asking for dirt)

ROBERT HARRIS (1992): Chicken bucket, two large pizzas, Pepsi six-pack, jelly beans and Camel cigarettes

TERESA LEWIS (2010): Fried chicken, sweet peas and German chocolate cake

40. That's impressively petty, all things considered; ugh. (nt)

LOL!  I watched that story on the news last night as well.  The smarterest people on the internets missed something;

Quote

Senator John Whitmire: District 15

Occupation: Attorney
Education: University of Houston, B.A.; Bates College of Law, University of Houston
Legislative Experience: House Member, 1973 - 1982; Senate Member, 1983 - present
Hometown: Houston
Party: Democrat

I also know something else about this Senator.  He is a thug hugger.  He was all for 'inmate' rights until a death row prisoner got ahold of a cell phone, called the Senator and threatened him.

54. As they should

I mean seriously?

Why should the taxpayers lay out $100 for food when they have already spent $2.3 million dollars to kill someone?

I mean, if we only put them in prison for life it would have cost less than $1 million and THEN we could have probably sprung for a cheeseburger!

But since we already spent all that money to satisfy our blood lust...what ****ing nerve to be forced to give THEM something they might enjoy!

I'm going to watch this just to see how long it takes one of them to figure out they are bashing one of their own.

Texas prisons end special last meals in executions

http://news.yahoo.com/texas-prisons-end-special-last-me...

HOUSTON (AP) — It's a tradition with roots that can be traced far back in history: Before being put to death, a condemned prisoner can choose his last meal.

Not so anymore in Texas.

Officials who oversee the country's busiest death chamber stopped the practice on Thursday after a prominent state senator complained about a hefty request from a man executed for his role in a notorious dragging death. Now, inmates get to eat only what the kitchen serves.

The controversy began after Lawrence Russell Brewer, who was executed on Wednesday for the hate crime slaying of James Byrd Jr. more than a decade ago, asked for two chicken fried steaks, a triple-meat bacon cheeseburger, fried okra, a pound of barbecue, three fajitas, a meat lover's pizza, a pint of ice cream and a slab of peanut butter fudge with crushed peanuts. Prison officials said Brewer didn't eat any of it.

"It is extremely inappropriate to give a person sentenced to death such a privilege," Sen. John Whitmire, chairman of the Senate Criminal Justice Committee, wrote in a letter Thursday to Brad Livingston, the executive director of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

None of these stories are mentioning the Senators affiliation.  Heh.  This is a whole new thread.

May I suggest a Happy Meal?   No toy, of course.
“The national budget must be balanced. The public debt must be reduced; the arrogance of the authorities must be moderated and controlled. Payments to foreign governments must be reduced, if the nation doesn't want to go bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance.”

The DUmp is a gold mine of proof that people who think they are very smart usually are not.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

This is indeed a tradition, the French started it with one last cigarette.

I have no problem with this last meal, it is a civilised way of treating those that must die.

Perhaps a mental game of this is it for the condemed or a strange way to say good by to a human.

Who knows , the last meal may be a Christian tradition going back to the last supper.

DUmmies missed one of the classic last meals served to a black victum of Bubba Clinton's election campaign:

Quote
Clinton had learned his lesson. By 1992 the presidential candidate was insisting that Democrats “should no longer feel guilty about protecting the innocent.” To make his point, he flew home to Arkansas mid-campaign to watch the execution of Rickey Ray Rector, a 40-year-old black man convicted of killing a black police officer. After shooting the cop, Rector shot himself in the head and damaged his brain.

Though courts decided Rector was mentally competent to be put to death by lethal injection, evidence suggests otherwise. Rector’s prison guards called him “the Chickman” because he thought the guards were throwing alligators and chickens into his cell. He would grip the bars and jump up and down like an ape. On the night of his execution, Rector saved the slice of pecan pie to be eaten before bedtime, not realizing his death would come first. He also told his attorney that he would like to vote for Clinton in the fall.

A simple oversight I am sure. :hammer:

The government wouldn't allow a happy meal.  It contains too much trans fat and would be unhealthy for the prisoner.

Then-Chief Justice John Marshall observed, “Between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos.”

John Adams warned in a letter, “Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet, that did not commit suicide.”

I get hungry every time I read one of those "last meal" articles.

Dark thoughts here, with this uncertain life is not every meal we eat potentially our " Last Meal".???

So one orders a 3 inch thick T-Bone, mashed potato's, gravy and a salad.   Upsetting news comes, pain in chest perhaps, such a bad case of nerves that one gets the runs.    So we pay for it but cannot eat it.

This could be our "Last Meal" we just don't know it or want to believe it. Who wants cold pizza and warm beer for their last pleasure on earth????

These meals for the condemned are ordered days in advance and the prisoner at the time of ordering it is still hopeful for a reprieve,  then as the time counts down, every minute they live must be a ball breaker for them.

I find no problem with this last meal for the scumbags, if they can eat it facing death, so be it.  If they cannot have a healthy appetite at that time, so be it.

Worse is the innocent in hospitals and nursing homes that are from no fault of their own knowing their days are numbered forced to eat food with no salt or sugar, not one last cigarette or a shot and a beer. No coffee or tea, not even a frigging donut fried in lard.

We are a strange society that will allow a monster one last meal of their choice but when it comes to the innocent on a kind of death row, sorry, anything you ask for is bad for your health.

The biggest regret is when my Dad was dieing I did not smuggle him cigarettes and some ice cold beer.  Put salt on his food and sugar in his forbidden coffee. His last meal should of been Lobster Pie with lots of melted butter and heavy cream,  Hell I should have placed him in a wheel chair and taken him to a Titty Bar for a lap dance.

Had he been allowed to eat drink and be marry, he may have lived a few more months longer, or died the next day.

My most tear jerked came from a documenting about Nam.   Showed the medics off a chopper with a man in a gurney rescued from a jungle fight, the man was in agony, a white warrior and a black medic gave him a couple hits off a joint, to ease his pain .     Seems the medics had run out of pain medication and used what they had at hand.

Rant ended for now, screw the people that make any rules for anyone about to die.

For my last meal I would want a vine ripened tomato sandwich off the tomato seed I planted yesterday......and I'm sure some federal judge would grant my request. :-)

I think all meals on death row should be limited to stewed okra, the most awful thing I can think of.
