And now there is one......
« on: September 22, 2011, 09:17:44 PM »
We lost Emmy late this afternoon. She led a good life for almost 14 years, but I'm selfish and want her back.  :bawl:

She's the 2nd dog that died in the last few months. Digging graves is getting real old. Cody, our chocolate lab, better not pull anything this year, but he's going to be 10 years old on Halloween and anything can happen, especially with the larger breeds.

Thank you. We got her from our vet when she was only 6 weeks old.

Condolences. As we all know pets aren't just pets, They're family.

On the upside, after the appropriate amount of time could there be some puppy breath waking you in the mornings sometime inn the future?

Not until Cody dies. Then my wife will probably get a smaller dog that we can take with us on trips.

I'd just hate to have a dog outlive me, but in reality, at my age I'd go first. My wife would then have a companion to hang around with her.

I have a buddy coming over this afternoon to dig the grave for Emmy. My back won't allow me to do it, and I don't want my wife to do that kind of labor any more, even though she says that she wouldn't care. We're also running out of room for new graves; including Emmy, there will be a total of at least 7 dogs buried in a row in the back yard, overlooking the creek and woods.

We have always had a dog in our home, many times more than just one dog.

Awwww, she was adorable.  Sorry for your loss!  How is Cody taking being the only dog?

Cody is not an alpha male. He's an omega male, and he's kind of lost without Emmy. She ruled the house.

Aww...  I think if you try your best not to grieve around Cody and stay upbeat (at least around him)...dogs live in the moment, he'll be just fine after a short time.   :grouphug:

Yerah, we know. It'll get better after Emmy's buried this afternoon. She's on a dolly in the garage now.

Now this comes at a bad time for me, we have two rescue dogs that are 17-18 years old and we decided to get a puppy to keep them on their toes.   It definitely worked the old fellas get beat up every day, are forced to move and run about and not just lay down and die.

However in the last few weeks we see the old timers are not so up to it, the VET. is surprised the old boys are still with us, no problem but no teeth and old age.

We are at the point that when the old dudes sleep we watch their sides to insure they are breathing. They do now have nightmares will whine and legs move about, can still walk and get excited when company visits, eyes still bright and clear but I fear they are going deaf.    Sense of smell is still there but they no longer come to us when called.

Hubby refuses to accept that his Buddy's are very old man dogs and keeps taking them for grooming and what not.

These 2 little guys in the past sat in a basket on both our Kayaks, gave us more times of fun then I can count.

At this point I am more worried about Hubby if one or both go, and they will soon.-------

CG, very sorry to hear of Emmy. Another chapter closes, but I'm sure Cody will be fine.

And I'm glad to hear you've got a buddy to dig the grave. It's already tough enough without having to do that too.

CG, that's a great gesture from your vet. I'm sure you've been going to him/her for a long time, but it helps knowing he's with you in your grief and and that you're not just another customer.

CG, that's a great gesture from your vet. I'm sure you've been going to him/her for a long time, but it helps knowing he's with you in your grief and and that you're not just another customer.

He's a great guy, and the vets he hires are also great. He now has 2 hospitals, and the one down the street from us is open from 6:30 AM to 8:30 PM, with no appointment necessary, and it has at least 8 vets in attendance. Both of our kids worked for him during the school years.

We couldn't bury Emmy yesterday. The ground is just too hard, and we could not get deeper than about 4". I had my buddy come over with his backhoe, and even he had some problems digging the hole with it (it was white Illinois clay), but she's buried now. We lucked out with the rain, too. It was forecast last night and this morning, and there was not even a drop of rain. Now it can pour, and that will help to settle the ground at the grave. Latest forecast calls for rain from today through Tuesday, although it's still sunny out there now. Vic will come back with his skidsteer later this fall to finish a big drainage project in our back 40, and he'll dress up the grave at the same time.

He also bought a house about 1/2 block from us, which he is rehabbing. So I don't have to worry about big snowfalls either, since he and his machine will help us with our snowplowing.

Thank God for Victor and his machines! He also digs the graves for his Lutheran church. He's a member of my American Legion post. :usflag:

Yeah, I was wondering about the hardness of the ground right now. Here in MO, it's like concrete. No way in hell I can dig any kind of hole in this stuff.....

Victor sounds like a great neighbor to have. :cheersmate:

So sorry to hear about Emmy, CG.

Yesterday at work, I spoke with a lady on the phone and we got on the subject of our cats, and how hard it is to lose one.

She said...." they aren't lost to us, they are just waiting for us to come join them in a different place."

Thought that was a really neat way to look at it.

Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

Save the Earth... it's the only planet with chocolate.

"My therapist told me the way to achieve true inner peace is to finish what I start. So far I've finished two bags of M&M's and a chocolate cake. I feel better already." – Dave Barry

A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands.

Thank you, everyone. After almost 14 years, it's kind of hard to let go.

And Cody is wandering around like a lost soul. When I brought him home to us, he had 2 buddies. In the span of a few months he has none.
