It is my firm belief that many disenchanted repubicans have, over the last 10 years, become Dems

I am not applying this to any specific person or group of people. It seems clear, however, that many long held Democratic values have been watered down or completely abandoned in favor of what used to be mainstream repubican values. As this has happened to the Democratic party, the repubican party has moved very far right.

I think the people on the left have been abandoned.

Maybe this really is a center right country. Or maybe it is simply made to look that way by the media and their owners.

Man, talk about cognitive dissonance.

Since when were Democrat values anything remotely similar with mainstream Republican values?

1. it is made to look that way

It is a right wing propaganda lie that this is a conservative, or "center-right" country.

The left has been abandoned. Smashed is more like it.

Some Democrats spread the right wing theme that "this is a conservative country." They do that in order to advance their agenda of moving the Democratic party to the right.

2. It's also happened before when the Hamiltonian party has made a deal with the devil and the devil has taken over and driven them completely nuts. The Democrats got stodgy and conservative and a splinter party of progressives was formed around one or two burning issues.

Eventually, the issues got resolved, the progressives got complacent, and the Hamiltonians rushed in to take over the party.

We're just unlucky enough to be stuck in the period between the old nutty party

It's nice to see the defrocked warped primitive posting more than she had been, as we're lacking comedy material here.

The defrocked warped primitive should nadin "Hamiltonians" and "Jeffersonians," to find out who the contemporary Hamiltonians are; they aren't us.

3. "have been abandoned?"

That sounds so victim-y. To be a political force, it is not a matter of others supporting one's ideas, it is about getting one's ideas to become mainstream. It requires one's own effort. That attitude presumes the media, the Democrats, whoever, have a duty to advance a certain subset's ideas over that of others, even a majority. The tea party doesn't think like that. It is why they have more influence than they should.

One noticed, late last night, the passing of former U.S. Senator Charles Percy (R-Illinois).

In his day (1967-1985), Percy was considered a wild-eyed liberal, and for good reason.

Nowadays, since the country has shifted so far left, Percy would be called a "reactionary right-winger" by the primitives, given their rather curious measurements of "ideology."

So I dunno where the sparkling husband dude gets his nonsensical idea about ideological shifts.

Well, you have an oddball like Arlen Specter, who left the party because he was desperate for reelection - and is now in the dustbin.
And you have an oddball like Mayor Bloomberg, who was never actually a Republican and has become as embarrassingly insane as algore.

And then you have the millions of young democrat moonbats who grow up and become Republicans when their sense of honor and responsibility kicks in.

I know several decent and civilized Republicans who were democrats as children.
I don't know a single person who went the other way. It just doesn't happen.

I'm afraid the catbox squatter is way off base, again.

Uh huh.  I thought the same thing.

When people get wiser and change, it's always been one way.

I know lots of former Democrats now current Republicans; I don't know a single former Republican now current Democrat.

DUde has this backwards. Kennedy and Truman would never be elected. Even old-schools like Zel Miller and Joe Lieberman have been pushed out.  It's the D's that have moved so far left as to be unrecognizable to the old-time Dems.
