That might be the base rate.  Yeah, I know all about the 35 cents per kWh you're paying at the top tier in CA, but also consider that munis like LADWP and SMUD are paying lower rates.  That figure you see is an average.

Their ate is their rate no matter how much energy they use. I hated the tier deal in CA, we always paid the highest tier.

I'm pretty sure Texas is off. My parents pay about 9 cent per KWh and I know our rate in CA was over 15 per KWh.

The map must be way off. I don't pay attention to KWH rates, but I burn far more electricity here in red state hell, with a much bigger house and eight or nine months of AC usage, than I did up north, yet my electricity bill is significantly lower.

Maybe it's those aftermarket gears I installed in my electric meter.

I am paying some of the highest electrical rates in the country, and I can still manage to keep my bill under $175 with five people in a house with all electric appliances.

Granted, oil is going to destroy me this winter with 1--no prebuys available, 2--current prices are $3.50/gal, and they tend to climb as the season goes on.

http://www.eia.gov/cneaf/electricity/epa/fig7p5.html

Notice where it's highest, DUmmies?  And where it's lowest?

The only electric stuff we have is lights, cable all inclusive, [TV, PC. phone land line] -- kitchen fridge, freezer, washer dryer, dish washer  stuff on counter  we unplug after use.  Oh yes the electronic kitty litter device. Cost $80.00 a month.

What I wonder about is if as we close off the rest of the house in the winter if we can heat with an electric fireplace the 800 square feet we use, bedroom, living room, dining room and kitchen and bathroom for less then the cost of Propane at $300-$400 every 6 weeks.

Then there is the question about the Propane, this summer we used it for the stove and hot water heater.

6 weeks and the bill is $180.00 ------WTF-----

We are being made bankrupt by these crazy costs.

I honestly don't know what I was saying here.

We do the level pay plan wherever we can - electric, propane, etc. We also set it to pay a little more than used. That way we usually end up with a surplus. Right now, we've got about $1100 balance on our propane account so that'll more than cover us this coming winter.

We also deduct anticipated utility, insurance premiums, savings account transfers and such from the monthly pension/SS deposits when they come in to the checking account. The balance is the monthly living expense.

I honestly don't know what I was saying here.

Problem with CA was, the baseline would vary widely.  When we moved from a 2 BR apartment in HB to a 3 BR house in Fountain Valley, it was a grand total of 2 1/2 miles away.

The baseline was about 15 percent different.  Go figure.  And yeah, the baseline on the house was ridiculously low (something like 300KWh in summer.)  Basically meaning if you ran the AC when the Santa Ana's were blowing in August, you were pretty well ****ed.

I used to pay about 75 a month for electric, now it averages 135.  It's easy to explain--I've added two large fishtanks and three air conditioners (they never all run simultaneously though).  Good thing I got rid of my dryer and switched over to CFC bulbs, or the bill would be even higher.  There are a zillion tips for lowering your electric bill.  Unfortunately this involves sacrifice or compromise, not something I've seen anyone at DU comfortable with.

If this DU person paying is paying $300 she's either living in a poorly designed McMansion or she's just an idiot...or both.
