Two US citizens sentenced by a Tehran court to eight years in prison for espionage will be freed on bail in two days, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told US television network NBC. The men's lawyer says bail has been set at $500,000 each.
 
President Mahmud Ahmadinejad said in interviews Tuesday that Iran would release two US hikers jailed for spying in a couple of days on bail which their lawyer said had been set at $500,000 each.

"I am helping to arrange for their release in a couple of days so they will be able to return home. This is of course going to be a unilateral humanitarian gesture," Ahmadinejad told The Washington Post.

"It is a unilateral pardon" of the hikers, he added.

In a separate interview with US network NBC News, Ahmadinejad said Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal would be released "in two days" but their lawyer Masoud Shafii told AFP that they would be freed only when bail had been paid.  ---SOURCE---

We had that conversation in the office. They were supposedly hiking in the Kurdish region of Iraq, but who the hell says, "Hmm, we should take a vacation and go hiking". Like Rebel said, if you're really going hiking you hit the trails in a national park. I don't want to give these guys the benefit of the doubt and say yes, they really are that stupid and really were just hikers. These guys are CIA or some other alphabet agency.
Of course there is that chance these really are genuine idiots like what's-her-name bleeding heart princess that threw herself in front of a bulldozer in Gaza, in which case I'm all for Iran keeping them.

I heard a story that they were hiking said border region to find evidence of American preparations to go to war with Iran, and they blundered onto the other side.  Not sure just how true it is, but it would explain some things.

I heard one of their friends/relatives say the same thing in an interview, but can not find anything online about it.  Given their ages, it wouldn't surprise me to find out they were anti-Bush, anti-war zealots.
