Just how poor are the poor folks in the US?
« on: September 06, 2011, 07:05:56 PM »
Hi,

This is one of the most easily understood and powerful presentations I have seen in quite sometime.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkebmhTQN-4

In a nutshell this really explains what is wrong with this country in simple terms even I could understand.  I would not only encourage you to watch it but send it to everyone on your mailing list, it is that good!

regards,

I love Bill Whittle. He is a genius.
I can see November 2 from my house!!!

Spread my work ethic, not my wealth.

Forget change, bring back common sense.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

I can't watch videos....but I'd like to ask a question. Why are our so poor, so fat?

Well, if you listen to the poverty pimps, it's because the only foods "da po" can afford are full of starches and fat.

Really?  Fruits and vegetables aren't terribly expensive.  Good cuts of chicken, pork, and beef can be had at a relatively low cost.

No, DUmmies, the reason the poor are fat is a root cause of how they find themselves poor in the first place--a series of poor life choices.

Hi,

The video makes a terrific point about the fact our poor are not quite as poor as one would think.  My guess is the reason they may be fat is unlike the taxpayer who is working their tails off, the poor are sitting on their tails getting fat.

You got my point. The only exercise they seem to get is when they're out seeking more freebies.

You mean like when they're handing out applications for Section 8 vouchers?

Anyone here remember Sharon Jasper?

Section 8 housing (free) and 60" HDTV.  Pretty much says it all right there.

I agree.   A lot of people from poor communities who live on dollar-menu fat calories and things fried in bacon fat do so because that's all they've known and it's really a combination of factors such as education, parenting, and peers - a vicious cycle that I would imagine it takes a lot of fortitude and intelligence to break.

That's true. I was just in Kroger yesterday grocery shopping. BOGO on almost all meats except chicken. I got 4 pot roasts for 20 bucks and 4 packages of pork chops for about 14 bucks. Ground beef was finally down to about 2 bucks a lb and ground turkey I can usually find in rolls at meijer for a buck a lb. Chicken I can always find on sale--boneless skinless for 1.79 a lb and split breats(I like these if I'm going to bake chicken--the bone in and skin keep them moist imo) for .99 a lb. I can spend about 60-100 bucks on meat and between using it in recipes or as the main portion of the meal with sides I can probably knock out about 3-5 weeks worth of dinners for my family. You buy all the side component items, some vegetables, etc at ALDI's and you can keep a pretty reasonable budget and eat healthy too. I think I'm doing about 400 a month and I seem to add to my supplies every month so I keep a fully stocked pantry on that budget.

Really? Helpwith her rent so she doesn't have to work as much and can focus on school? Wow, maybe I should have made that a priority too instead of survival when I was 20 and I'd be done with my degree by now. F*ck....seriously, F*ck. How pathetic. How about taking one or two classes at a time instead of 4(likely on a Pell Grant) and just working your way through? Going into the military? Did that ever occur to her? Living with relatives? Rooming with another person? No, instead we keep our independence and work part time on the taxpayers dime so we can focus on school.  :thatsright:
