President Barack Obama will honor NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson and the 11 other Chase drivers from last year in a White House ceremony on Wednesday – but nearly half of the 2010 playoff contenders won't be there.

NASCAR said Thursday that five drivers – Greg Biffle, Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards, Kevin Harvick and Tony Stewart – will not be attending the White House visit due to "schedule conflicts."



They must be very busy people. Regardless of one's political views, the president is still the president – and an opportunity to speak with the leader of the free world is a rare and special one.

You'd think whatever photo shoots or sponsor appearances these drivers have lined up on Wednesday afternoon – if that's indeed the reason – could be rescheduled. After all, this is the President of the United States we're talking about here.


For a sport that prides itself on patriotism, having so many drivers turn down the president's invitation simply seems strange.

Johnson, Denny Hamlin, Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch, Clint Bowyer, Jeff Burton and Matt Kenseth will attend.

Now, am I going to do what it takes to make my sponsors happy, you know, the ones that give me money or am going to do what the one that takes away my money wants...decisions...decisions...They probably had to think about this a long time...like maybe a whole nanosecond.

There must be about 25 or 30 NASCAR drivers right now that are glad they didn't make the chase last year.

I would not waste my time and money to see any politician (Repub or Democ.). The fact that he is a black Democrat has nothing to do with being a no show.

In other news, unemployment is steady at 9.1% since the economy showed zero net job growth last month.  The last time that happened was February 1945.  But Barry has plenty of time to **** around with a bunch of NASCAR drivers.

If it had been me, I wouldn't have accepted the invite either, and I wouldn't have explained it away as a "scheduling conflict", either.  I'd have told the pResident's secretary that I wouldn't be caught dead in the same building with the pResident unless I knew for a certainty that my wallet, checkbook and wristwatch were secured in a vault that only I knew the combination to.

NASCAR does pride itself on patriotism.  Perhaps these drivers are fed up with how the current president deliberately trying to destroy this Nation and not showing up is their form of protest.  Remember, "dissent is patriotic".  Or at least it is when the President is a republican.
