Pre-storm advice please.

Since I am now alone, I have a lot of small projects to do today and tomorrow. Please let me know if I should take the screens off the exterior doors and put the glass panes back. I will close the storm and regular windows.
I would also like to know if I should take the air conditioner out. I'm sure the plastic flanges will not hold up with the winds we are expecting.

My worst fear is loss of power but I have bought a long pump/hose manually operated that I can use to pump out anything that accumulates in my old cellar.

Good luck to all of us on the east coast.

1. I can't advise you on the windows, but I went through Isabel with all the A/C units in the windows in the house I lived in at the time. I have heard Irene might be worse than Isabel, so if you can manage getting the unit out by yourself, it might not be a bad idea.

Be sure to fill your bathtubs with water (to flush toilets, in case you lose water service.)

Question.  I really don't know this stuff.

If the water service goes out, the sewer service is kaput too, right?

2. should you be evacuating?

My neighbors are I are dithering here in RI about evacuating. Not the wind so much as the possible storm surge.

My Dad always put tape across the windows, to try to keep the glass from shattering. I have never done that.

If you expect a chance of flooding, put stuff high up - in the second floor, on top of furniture if you have only one floor, etc.

We never did anything with screens and I don't recall those being a problem.

I have an emergency kit (which will be useless if I get flooded) - flashlight, battery operated lanterns, spare batteries, battery operated radio, water stockpiled, food, medicines. ditto supplies of food and meds for pets.

God bless us every one.

3. p.s.

I think AC units are heavy. You might be biting off more than you can chew, esp. if you find the window then won't close if it hasn't in a long time.

if you have some small pieces of wood (a hardware store should be able to cut some to size for you) you could nail them over the openings where the plastic is.

Let us know how you are doing after the storm.

Most sewer systems are straight gravity, and you can flush the toilet by dumping a bucket of water into it; toilets are basically just a big gooseneck pipe (the water in the gooseneck acts as a check valve against backflow and sewer gases) with a seat on the "Up" end and the sewer drainage on the "Down" end, totally unpowered unless and until a lift station is involved between the toilet and the ultimate treatment system.

It would depend on what causes the water to go out.  If it is from a power outage, then the sewage will still work.  However if there is widespread flooding that could cause problems with the sewer system.

Experience tells me that the water system is likely to go down before the sewer system.  Almost every time there is flooding around here, we get some pumps and motors from various water districts.

I've observed and read many of the primatives threads in regards to "being prepared".

For some reason, they forget one very important sourse of water if needed.

How many gallons are contained within a hot-water heater?

Am I right? or is he right?

If there is no water to provide pressure to flush the toilet it no worky.  Having city sewers is great, but without water in the tank, you are, well, up shit creek.  Literally.

More proof that the DUches are completely helpless and would die withing 72 hours if there were not conservatives around to help them live.  No wonder they are so pro government.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

You know, I shouldn't think like this but I was kindda hoping New York City would get a little bit of a blow and some high water. I wanted to see how Obama handled it, how the DUmmies protected him and then watch "those" people robbing, looting the stores while scream "Somebodies gotz to hope us...hope deese peoples."... :lmao:

NYC is going to get hit hard by Irene.  Remember, though, neither Ray Nagin nor Kathleen Blanco ordered any evacuations in NO.  Mike Bloomberg did.  His attitude seems to be, "If we tell you to, GET THE **** OUT."

Actually, Nagin did issue a mandatory evacuation.  People just didn't evacuate.  Jim Cantore is in NYC.  That ain't good.

Agreed about Cantore--the Weather Channel has a pretty funny commercial about Jim Cantore showing up in people's towns.  If Cantore is there, that's where the worst stuff is going. :panic: :panic: :panic:
