DOJ raids guitar factory
When I first saw this on Drudge's site, I thought to myself "good, they are going after illegal aliens working in the factory".  But after reading the story, it is painfully clear that this administration is more interested in punishing job producing companys who use suspected illegal wood than they are going after illegal aliens.

 :banghead:

The Gibson company should say the wood isn't illegal, it is just undocumented.

They got the time, the money and the man power to track illegal wood and "arrest" it but they can't do the same for illegal alliens.

"Illegal Wood" sounds like a bad porno.

Payments to foreign governments must be reduced, if the nation doesn't want to go bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance.”

According to what I read in the local paper, Gibson can prove the wood is not illegally obtained.

This is the second time this has happened to Gibson.

Doesn't the government have more important things to do instead of spend all the time, money and energy on this?

How much money has Gibson given to republican politicians?

Cross The Border, Lose Your Bentley; The Lacey Act Applies To Automobiles, Too

The music world is going nuts over the Federal Government’s second major raid of Gibson Guitars in just two years. Agents stopped production at Gibson’s facilities and confiscated massive quantities of wood, unfinished guitars, and finished products. This article covers the basics, including Gibson owner Henry Juszkiewicz’s decision to defy the federal government and continue shipping finished guitars to retailers after the raid.

Very few TTAC readers travel with guitars, particularly across the country’s borders, so I don’t expect this to worry you personally. If, on the other hand, you want to drive across the Canadian or Mexican border in your own car — or even a rental — consider this: The same law that allows the Feds to raid American manufacturers and seize the possessions of Americans without compensation applies to cars, too.

Simply possessing the timber product can make you a felon, regardless of whether or not you were involved in the harvesting, were the original importer, or had received any information regarding the source of the timber product. Here’s an example. Let’s say you are driving a Bentley Flying Spur with a rosewood interior. Importation of Brazilian rosewood is a felony under the Lacey Act. Do you know where the rosewood in your Spur came from? Can you prove it?
TTAC: The Truth About Cars

Quote
The Lacey Act combats trafficking in “illegal” wildlife, fish, and plants. The 2008 Farm Bill (the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008), effective May 22, 2008, amended the Lacey Act by expanding its protection to a broader range of plants and plant products. The Lacey Act now, among other things, makes it unlawful, beginning December 15, 2008, to import certain plants and plant products without an import declaration.

It may be a combination of the non-union issue, and Gibson's political contributions, but, I did find this about the CEO's 2010 Republican contributions:  http://landmarkreport.com/andrew/2011/08/ceo-of-gibson-guitar-a-republican-donor/

Using exotic and/or endangered woods in your products is just fine depending on what those products are and what the manufacturer's political affiliations might be.

New Scandal at DoJ as Illegal Guitars End Up In Hands of Mexican Drug Lords
by Iowahawk

The secret program came to light early this morning in the border town of Nogales, Arizona, after what was described as a wild battle of the bands between members of the Sinaloa cartel and Los Zetas, two of Mexico’s most notorious violent drug gangs.
“Usually these guys are armed with Mexican Strats and Squires, Epiphones, small caliber stuff like that,” said Pedro Ochoa, 36, an eye witness to the sonic melee. “This time they were packing the heavy firepower.”

The steady barrage of power chords and piercing solo attacks attracted the attention of nearby U.S. Border Patrol agents, who arrived at the scene just as Los Zetas broke into Led Zeppelin’s ‘Immigrant Song.’ By the time the dust had cleared, U.S. Border Patrol Agent Oscar Jimenez was found in a catatonic state of headbanging. He was later flown to University of Arizona Hospitals, where his condition is listed as seriously rawked.

The spandex-clad suspects were able to flee back into Mexico, but not before abandoning their arsenal of axes – the quality of which shocked Border Patrol agents.

I had Oranges confiscated at a state line in--this has been a long time , Arizona.   RT.10 I believe.

Lots of nasty stuff trying to get into the country, loads of rice is being destroyed if even one DEAD beetle is found.  Last time it got in it cost millions to kill the bugs off.[ S. Korean?]

Warnings about some tree eating bug new to the country found in Chicago.  Cow hides were seized from Kenya when found to have been contaminated with anthrax, one of NYC's best know drum maker died as a result.

It is possible that shipments of wood from overseas is found to contain lava after being delivered to the US, officials tracked down the buyers and destroyed it to be on the safe side.

Little by little manufactures are using plastic pallets instead of the wood ones, however foreign markets have not been able to afford the expense.    Lord knows what a wood pallet will pick up as it moves from the dock to rail lines or trucks to head out across the country.

We do not have enough inspectors to check everything coming into the country, a small sample may be taken of a shipment of whatever, if that sample passes, the shipment is OK to go where ever.

Same with Fish and or meat products, I have see literally tons of foreign farmed fish rejected when it reached the processing plant by refrigerated rail cars.   One small sample and the intire order is sent away, horrid as that fish could have fed thousands of hungry humans,   I wondered if the fish ended up in pet food.

This is all natural hitchhiking by organisms. Be careful in the grocery store, you never know what you will find under your banana.

WBT Radio out of Charlotte N.C. interviewed the CEO of Gibson this afternoon. He stated that in 2009 the DoJ took over a half million dollars worth of wood that they haven't gotten back yet and there has been no trial on that case as yet. However they did have some kind of court hearing Monday on that (2009) and the DoJ asked for an indefinite time extention.

On the more recent case, and on the 2009 case, if I understood him correctly, the reason for the warrants was sealed and they really have no idea on what grounds the warrants were issued in the first place.

In both cases, armed swat teams raided them and took individual workers into individual rooms and interrogated them. They took paper work, computers, hard drives and disc. which have not been returned....and of course, all the suspect wood which GIBSON had all the proper paper work for....twice.

BUT HERE'S THE KICKER...Somewhere at sometime during all this a federal judge said that perhaps GIBSON would be better off if they made their guitars in Madagascar.... :argh: :argh: :argh: That's enough to make a body want to shoot somebody, doesn't it.

The GIBSON CEO said he would forward the court transcript that contained what the judge said. I guess in a little while you could look it up on WBT's radio site under (I Think) the Keith Larson show...3 pm to 6 pm show.

Gibson CEO: Feds Demanded Foreign Labor

The federal government seized wood, guitars and electronic records from Gibson's Nashville warehouses in 2009 and again last week.  According to Juszkiewicz, that's when the Feds made an unusual request from the American manufacturer.

On KMJ airwaves, Juszkiewicz revealed that representatives of the US government told Gibson that their legal issues would "disappear" if they used Madagascar labor instead of American labor.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Gibson Guitar CEO Henry Juszkiewicz is fuming. As he sees it, his company, the iconic maker of the Les Paul and Firebird X electronic guitars, is being unjustly attacked by the federal government.

On Aug. 24, armed agents from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service raided two of Gibson's Tennessee production facilities and its Nashville headquarters.

I have a friend who works there... he's a supply manager in their "exotic materials" department (I forget what their term for it is).  I'll probably be hearing from him soon.

The owner was on FOX this morning.  He said he wasn't targeted by the IRS, (that he knows of) it was the Fish & Wildlife dept that was after him.

I would sure like to see this case opened up by congress to find out why.
