Just received last months electic bill.

550.00!!!! I have 1900 sq ft. I keep my air moderate and water usage to a minimum.

WTF??? I know it's been HOT, but DAMN!

Can you imagine if Cap and Tax passed? And how many coal plants are going to be shut down? will costs go down then?

My parents have a 2400 sq ft house, they recently got their electricity bill, it was $324 ( I know this because we are living with them while or house is finished being built). She needs to take advantage of one of the many pluses of living in Texas, find another provider that charges lower rates.

In CA, not ever turning on the a/c, our electricity bill would run AT LEAST $250-$300 a month ($2800 sq ft). If we had a few days of hot weather and used the a/c for a few hours a day, it would shoot up considerably.  We hit one month last summer where our bill was over $600. You don't have a choice of electric providers in CA and their rates are tiered, their cheapest rate is WAY more than my parents rate here in Texas.  Everyone I knew was always in the highest tier, even during the "winter".  The tiers were by the amount of electricity you used, the more you used the higher the tier.

Another hint, she should also take advantage of the plan where you can spread out all of your monthly averages over a year.  Yeah you pay more for electricity in the winter months but it saves you from only being able to only afford ramen when your summer electricity bill comes.  You could then really get your shit together and do a BUDGET.
 
Oh and another thing, she should be happy about paying what she is paying, she voted for "energy rates to necessarily skyrocket". Just you wait DUmmie for the EPA's new rules to hit Texas, you won't even be able to afford ramen, if you are able to afford electricity at all.

It would be nice if we all had that choice.  NV Energy is a rip off.  They tell us to conserve our energy, people do, but then they jack up their rates to make up for the "loss" they had while people were conserving energy.  ::)

I hate them (NV Energy) and wish we had at least one other choice for our energy/power.

That sounds like what Ameren does in Illinois.  The state regulators are in their pocket and grant them most rate hike requests.

Here in central CA, PG&E has different rates for different neighborhoods. Poor people get better rates.

We just went through a record hot spell in SE Kansas NE Oklahoma, and we have had an extra refrigerator running in the garage for a couple months.  We weren't terribly shocked at getting an electric bill that was almost 30% higher than we've ever paid, despite keeping the thermostat at 75 or above the entire time.  We just figured we'd better get used to it, it's only going to get worse.  If Obama gets much more of what he wants, we'll look back on these bills with great fondness when we're paying triple and having to apply for permits to be allowed to have A/C.

Mine runs about $450 a month during the summer.  But that's with pool pump going, wife keeping the house in the 70's while it is 100+ outside, etc.

Of course I do, and admit it. 

Anyway, even with a small window air-conditioner running to cool the bedroom during the intense heat-wave here for two weeks in mid-July, the bill was $37, about four bucks more than it usually it.

It's not that we enjoy lower electric rates here--we do, but the difference is slight--but that unlike the primitives on Skins's island, franksolich lives a minimalist life-style, dust rather than plugs in most of the electrical outlets here.

I do however feel for decent and civilized people afflicted with high bills; it's just that I don't sympathize for primitives with high utility bills.  After all, they voted for all this, we didn't.  And too, the primitives are the ones advocating shrinking carbon footprints--the footprints of others, not theirs.

You guys here have my worried condolences; the primitives can kiss my ass.

Idiot.  Learn to like sweating if you can't pay that amount.  Close the damn blinds and curtains during the day.
