These things are designed to go from shut down to rated speed, fully loaded, in LESS THAN 10 SECONDS. Try that with your car at home and see how well it does.
Yep.....back in the day, my Onan 850 would do it in
seven seconds, and that was during weekly exercise periods when it had to sync with the shore power frequency and phase angle (make-before-break transfer switch).
On the load side you couldn't tell when the transfer occurred without watching the enunciator panel.
The Virginia genset failure could have been a simple "overcrank" shutdown due to a plugged injector or a bad glow plug.......which is why you generally test them under full load every week, but occasionally shit happens.......
