FCC officially kills Fairness Doctrine, wiping it from rules

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski announced the elimination of 83 outdated and obsolete agency rules on Monday, including the controversial Fairness Doctrine.

“The elimination of the obsolete Fairness Doctrine regulations will remove an unnecessary distraction. As I have said, striking this from our books ensures there can be no mistake that what has long been a dead letter remains dead," Genachowski said in a statement.

"The Fairness Doctrine holds the potential to chill free speech and the free flow of ideas and was properly abandoned over two decades ago. I am pleased we are removing these and other obsolete rules from our books."

The rule required broadcasters to cover controversial issues in a manner deemed fair and balanced by the FCC. The commission deemed it unconstitutional in 1987 and ceased enforcement.

2. How about a rule requiring truth?

If we can't demand equal time to present the other side, how about a rule requiring Faux News to tell the damned truth for a change.

How about someone finding lies from Fox News?

7. Fairness in Communications is dead.

Long live Fairness.
 for justice and fairness

It would have killed MSNBC, CNN and the alphabet networks to have provided equal time. Fox would have seen the least changes in their programming.

16. But, but...this can't be bad, because it happened under a Democratic President

Anyone who criticizes this must want a republican president, who would completely destroy the fairness doctrine...oops, never mind.

Good think Keith Olbermann is no longer under the FCC's purview as a cable television host.

Keef isn't under anyone's purview now.
AlgoreTV's audience could fit in my rec room, but there isn't one of them I'd invite.

I wonder if AlGore TV is still available through Charter in North Carolina.   The last time I was there, it was part of the standard package of channels, but this was at least ten years go.  It was so bad.  It was like watching YouTube expecting to get the nightly news, or whatever CNN is doing now with their iReports (basically the same thing).

Don't get me started on the public access cable channels in Davidson County and their Al-Jazeera/Amy Goodman reruns.

1+1=POTATO=FAIRNESS=REEDUCATION FOR THOSE THAT DON'T THINK SO.

That. Is. All.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Algore's channel is on the Time Warner digital cable package.  I know it's there because I accidentally found it while looking for the digital local weather stations--it's only one station higher than one of said local weather stations.

I'd watch Bravo, or the Oprah Winfrey Network, before I'd watch that tripe.

Democrats/socialists really don't like free speech. Likely they have simply abandoned the fairness doctrine and are pursuing other avenues to stifle conservative free speech.

34. Exactly. The Fairness Doctrine allowed us to HAVE a voice
 now we have NONE!

None?  $kimmer was kind enough to set up a nice piece of real estate for you to rant and wail to your heart's content.  Ungrateful pig.  You can even swim over to any other island and spout off there, too.  You can go outside and wave a sign and shout into a bullhorn.  You have plenty of voice, idiot.

Besides, there hasn't been a Fairness Doctine in practice for over 20 years.  It's not something you "had."  Lorien goes on and on over there, acting like some basic human right has been ripped from her.  She forgets there's an internet, even as she's posting her dopey panicky posts on it.
