I have some empathy for the hikers but would you consider hiking in Iraq?

On the Iraq/Iran border? During a war where the people pretty much all have guns and hate westerners?

Hiking the Iraq/Iran border?

Would you do that?

Don

I will buy your ticket Don. You can report what you find when you get back.  :whatever:

I kind of took him as saying he wouldn't hike there, in which case I have to agree with him.  I also happen to think that anybody who puts themselves so firmly in harm's way gets what is coming to them.

Yeah, hiking in a war zone with with hostiles all over the place and you don't even speak the language shows a dangerous lack of common sense. You would be better off staying at home and playing "put the fork in the toaster".

They were UC Berkeley graduates, they probably thought every place in the world except the US would be loving and kind and would embrace them.

They thought that since they hated President Bush as much as the Iranians they would be accepted with open arms.

A self correcting problem.
"We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and then bid the geldings to be fruitful."

C.S. Lewis

A community may possess all the necessary moral qualifications, in so high a degree, as to be capable of self-government under the most adverse circumstances; while, on the other hand, another may be so sunk in ignorance and vice, as to be incapable of forming a conception of liberty, or of living, even when most favored by circumstances, under any other than an absolute and despotic government.

That's close to their reasoning.  I had heard a family member say that they were not spying, at least not for the US government.  Quite the contrary, they were looking for ammunition to use against President Bush with regards to military action near the Iraq border.  Other that hearing it the one time, I never saw anything in print or anything else about it.  Let them hang them.

In kinder, gentler times, sure I would hike in Iraq.  There's a lot to be seen.  The ruins of Babylon and the Hanging Gardens in Mesopatamia, and the mountains in the west are still regarded by Iraqis to make a great area for summer retreats.  Nowadays? Hell since the 1940s?  Hell no, too many people subscribing to a rabid ideology running around the place, Ba'ath and islamic fascist.

I remember as a kid reading articles by Jack O'Connor, in Outdoor Life, about his trips to Iran to hunt ibex with the Shah's brother in the 1950's.
When Jimmeh betrayed the Iran, the Shah's brother moved to Florida.
