A funny (gardening/hot pepper) story
« on: August 17, 2011, 10:02:49 AM »
When I put the garden in at the church, I included two pepper plants I had bought from Home Depot, almost as an oversight.  Several weeks later, I looked at the little tags that were still stuck in the ground near them--"Cayenne Banana."  They're the only peppers that have grown for me.  About a week ago, I grabbed one and picked it.  It was almost 10" long.  Not really thinking, I took a bite out of it . . . and suddenly realized that the local Stewart's Shop (Carl knows about these) was three miles away, and I needed to get there right away.  When I got there, the manager (who was my sister's manager 20-some years ago, in a Stewart's near my parents) had little sample ice cream cones of Philly Vanilla in the freezer case near a register.  That took care of the immediate problem.  I bought a bottle of water and returned to the car, and continued to munch on the pepper as I went to work.  I got half of the thing down before pulling into the lot, and I gave the other half to one of the place's resident hot-foods eaters.  He said that he didn't need another hot pepper for the rest of the year.  I distributed more of these peppers over the next few days.

One of the guys who I gave one to, Monday, left it in his car overnight.  Then, he drove his car to work, and finding the pepper, figured that he could leave it in the car for the day.  There's lots of exposure to the sun where this guy parks.  When he got to his car and drove away, he noticed that his eyes were watering . . . profusely, as it turned out.  He remembered the culprit--the cayenne banana pepper that I had given him the day before, and he had forgotten to remove from his car.  He remembered this time, and had it that night--and the damned thing was still pretty hot, he told me.

I found a new prank idea, I think . . . :evillaugh:

The wife bought a pepper plant. She assured me that she would eat them all because me and son don't do little green peppers. The first one set both her ends on fire and she hasn't eaten another one since. I got a pile of them in the ice box. :-)

Years ago I planted some chile peppers. They were blazing hot!

I gave 2 to a buddy, and his wife used them in a big pot of chili. The peppers made the chili too hot to eat, and they had to throw it away.

That's great.  Cut one up and slip it into the air vents.

I like the way you think, Chris . . . but my work area is waaaaay too big for that to have any effect.

Caused me to recall that I really nailed a neighbor who was just an asshole. He celebrated Hitler's birthday. I got some thioglycolic acid, that if left unrefrigerated, will smell like skunk piss.

I used a syringe to inject some of it into his door, by the vent window (this was about 1972). He got rid of the truck, and he never had a clue why it smelled like he hit a skunk.

I planted random hot peppers one year and had one very producing plant.  It was (I later found out) called the Satan's Kiss habenjaro.  I didn't know that until I had cut one up bare handed to freeze.  I ended up with the oil all over after jumping in the shower to try to get it off.  A very eye opening experience!

One of our friends planted habeneros last year by accident. Not his fault, they were labeled as green pepper at the store. Knowing how much my husband and children like HOT peppers, he offered them to us. I ran them through the food processor and added a bit of vinegar and pickling salt to make a kind of salsa. By the time I was ready to put them into the water-bath canner, they had sealed themselves! We are still working on the first jar...a teaspoon at a time, usually in chili.
