What is this?
« on: August 16, 2011, 12:37:07 PM »

No, not the street sign
These things are all over our town. Showed up last week. From the angle you can't see the antenna that hangs down below the unit.  The only thing I can think of is it's part of PG&E's Smart Meter system, but an innerwebs search comes up with nothing.

It's part of the RFID tracker system.  The agents go into houses at night and put the chips under your skin in unobtrusive places.

Not solar that I can tell. I'll try to get a better picture of it.

It looks like something that police in VA are trying. It is (maybe?) an audio sensor that can triangulate gunshots. Supposedly, with these things the police will be alerted to possible gunshots without even having to be called and that will make them able to catch the bad guys faster.

Looks like they are transmitters for the water company. Oh well, no conspiracy.

We are on metered water. I guess the dolts earing 100k + yr don't want to walk to check meter readings.

Have you noticed some small grey boxes on the tops of street signs in town? These boxes are the second level of infrastructure being installed to automate the District’s meter reading activity. This will bring us closer to having the ability to quickly notify customers if we detect a potential leak on their property. The new meter reading device will send a flag notice out if the consumption of the customer runs continuously for 24 hours. When the system is fully up and running, we will receive notification of the potential leak within about three days and be able to inform the customer. With our old system, it was sixty days between meter readings and only larger leaks could be identified
.

Confirmed. Leaks my ass. Looks more like they are going to implement some sort of "green" bullshit if they think your'e using too much water.

If it really IS to detect water leaks (how, when it's 9-10 ft in the air?) it could be a good thing.

I had a foreclosure listing several years ago, that I had all the utilities turned on at the bank's insistence. Turns out there was a break in the water pipe between the line at the street and the house. Found out when I got a $900 bill!!!!! Bank had to pay it, too. Local companies all charge for any water including leaks - and if connected to a sewer system, they also charge sewer usage on leaks. The only time they may not charge sewer charges, is if a sprinkler system is separate from the main system. Can also call them if filling up a swimming pool and they MAY make adjustments, if called prior to filling pool. No adjustments are made for leaks.

It was far enough underground that it was undetectable by run-off into the street, and the front lot was big enough and sloped just enough that it caused all the water to basically stay underground. It was the last time, I had anything other than electricity turned on in a foreclosure, and I try to avoid even doing that as much as possible.

We have radio transmitters on the water meters here.  They don't have to get out of their trucks any more , but they do stop several places on each street.  Maybe these new boxes provide a central location for groups of homes?

I'm guessing we will be getting new meters in the near future. However, they better fix the box in front of my house, the meter is usually buried by dirt.
