He was what most schools call an "Adjunct professor," or "Adjunct faculty," which really means a local professional with a graduate degree teaching an undergrad class, usually in night school, within their professional area, like a lawyer teaching and undergrad Constitutional Law or Criminal Law & Procedure class for pre-law, sociology, or criminology students.
To use a military comparison, being an "Adjunct Professor" has about as much to do with being a real professor as being a Major has to do with being a Major General.
