Dozens Of Coal Factories Forced To Shut Down In Response To Strict EPA Regulation

Electric utilities announced the closure of dozens of coal-fired plants today in response to new EPA regulations mandating facilities to lower interstate greenhouse gas emissions. Among them:

American Electric Power Company said it would retire nearly 6,000 MW of generating capacity.

Duke Energy said it would retire its 862 MW factory in New Richmond, Ohio.

Georgia Power, a subsidiary of The Southern Company, said it would close an 871 MW generator by 2018, 18 years before the end of its useful life.

WTF is Obama thinking? Good luck with those electric cars...

You voted for him, yet you had no idea that he and his administration would do something like this?

these plants will need to be replaced with more efficient plants.

Good...

And you will scream like a stuck pig when costs for the new "efficient" plants get passed on to you.

I'm sure this will do wonders for our economy.  :whatever:

No problem mate...just put all the useful fools (DUmmies) in little wheels like hamsters and use them to drive the generators.

I'm guessing in 2013 the answer will be, none.

Those costs won't get passed on to them.  They are the very ones that get their utilities subsidized (by us, of course).

Obama said that he intended to bankrupt the coal industry during his campaign. Driving the power plants out of business is just a part of that.

Funny how we seem to know more about what 0bama campaigned on, than those who voted for him.

All of it?  Hey, DUmmies, I know math is hard for you, but what do you think is gonna happen to your rent in those 'utilities-supplied' apartments you infest?

Doesn't matter--that 6000 MW could supply 4 million people.  That 6000 MW now means that much less margin, meaning the various ISO's are scrambling to keep the system going without rolling blackouts, or worse.

Congrats, DUmmies.  Have fun freezing in the dark.

Not to mention in this neck of the woods we are at the very start of the Bay of Fundey------Strange configuration of our coast causes the tide to with draw at a fast rate leaving miles of mud flats.  Incoming tide in some parts are faster then a horse can ride.

How much power does it take from the ocean to unleash this tremendous amount of energy to cause in places the tide to rise in minutes from mud flats to over 25+ feet high on shore.

There are only 3-4+ places on earth where this takes place.    We in New Hampshire and Maine are one of them.

Next vacation you take, go to the Bay of Foundry or even our area and watch in awe as the tide recedes from the  banks in a minutes time and then refills a few hours time to, according to the moon cycle to over flow the bank.

The power of the tides has more energy then any kind of man made, constant, every 6 hours a change 24/7 all year long.

We wanted to harness the tide in the late 1930's but the war put a stop to it a all engineers and workers had to go into the war effort.

The power of the tide I have seen all my life, not at beaches but on the rivers up and down this coast.

I at one time went Kayaking without a thought and was stranded in the mud due to the water receding faster then I could paddle.

Here in WV, the EPA and MSHA have already shut down several mines, some that have never had any violations of any kind. I live in the coal fields, and probably 90% of our employment is in coal. Coal covers a lot of employment here; miners, truckers, railroaders and barge employees. Even our local stores hurt when the coal employment is down. And brother, we're hurting right now.

Which makes me wonder why WV voted for Manchin.  I know, I know--former governor, promised lots of free shit.  But the good people of WV should have known he won't be able to deliver nearly on the scale of the late Grand Kleagle "Sheets" Byrd.

Agreed, but everyone in WV loves Joe. Being Conservative in WV is tough. The folks in Washington and Charleston have pretty much turned us into a welfare state.

Joe is about as blue as a blue dog can get. He'll do or say anything to get votes. No political philosophy whatsoever. The more conservative WV becomes, the more to the right Joe will move. He could just as easily go socialist. Reminds me of a guy from Arkansas, minus all the mysterious deaths and the 2 for 1 deal.

Unlike Virginia, after going for Bush, TWICE!   :argh:

Damned Yankees from Northern Virginia.  I've seen a county by county maps of VA, post 2008 election.

The only blue counties in my area were Montgomery (Virginia Tech) and for some reason, Dickerson.  Most of the blue was in the north and east coast.  Large populations of yankee liberals there.
