Perry to make Sunday visit to WaterlooTexas Gov. Rick Perry will speak in Waterloo Sunday, his first visit to Iowa as a potential presidential candidate, a move that could diminish the attention any Republican presidential candidate might gain from Saturday’s straw poll in Ames.
Also Tuesday, his supporters offered new insights into their efforts to arrange an official presence at the straw poll.
“He’s obviously doing it to step on Ames,†Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics, said of Perry’s scheduled appearances in South Carolina and New Hampshire on Saturday and Iowa on Sunday. “There is no other explanation. He wants to squash the momentum of any winner or winners out of Ames.â€
Perry has been flirting with a presidential run for months. He will make a speech in South Carolina Saturday, the same day as the Iowa straw poll, where he is expected to make clear his intentions to run, although he may stop short of a formal announcement.
On Sunday, he will attend the Lincoln Day Dinner, a fundraiser hosted by the Black Hawk County Republicans. His fans view Perry, the nation’s longest continuously serving governor, as combining appeal among evangelical conservatives with a track record of strong job creation.
