This is one of those issues where I'm going to get it from both sides of the aisle.
Getting run over by traffic going both directions happens, when one's being reasonable.
Anyway, I could never figure out this giving things away to get an income tax deduction.
The primary reason one gets rid of something is because one doesn't need it any more, doesn't want it sitting around the place collecting dust and taking up room.
Any other reason to get rid of something pales into insignificance, when compared with that.
When I don't want something any more, I just want to get rid of it, get it out of my life.
I don't care if I "get something" for it, I don't care where it goes.
I just don't want to deal with it any more.
The last three motor vehicles I owned before the current one, I "sold" for a package of cigarettes all three times (because in Nebraska, one has to put a cash value on things). And earlier than that, when one of my older brothers died, I "sold" his second car for a package of cigarettes that time too.
I suppose in every case, I "threw away" several hundred bucks, or even something more than a thousand--none of these were Cadillacs or anything--but it wasn't worth my time and trouble to try to "get something" for them. I just wanted to get rid of them, to get them out of my life.
It uncomplicates life considerably, not worrying about such things.
